We stayed at the Mercure hotel for one night, booked around a month in advance. The hotel wasn’t cheap in comparison to other hotels in the city centre, but knowing it is a well established hotel with great facilities such as a swimming pool and sauna, we thought it was worth the extra cost for a one night stay. A few days after booking, I noticed that the hotel now had a 10% discount for the exact same night. I contacted the hotel asking if this discount could be applied to my booking, but they have not responded to any of my emails or messages. When checking in to our room, we were asked if we would like a room on a higher or lower floor, and opted for higher. The receptionist said that higher was a good choice as we had a better chance of getting a room with a nice view of Peace Gardens (surely they know exactly which rooms overlook Peace Gardens and which don’t, so could choose to assign us a room with a good view?) The receptionist checked us into room 404, which did not look over Peace Gardens (so much for having a higher chance of the nice views!). Not only did we not have the nice views, but our room was directly opposite the lift on the corridor. If we were staying longer than one night, I would have asked to move. The rooms are quite outdated regarding decor, but they are very spacious and have a large bathroom, shower and bathtub. The morning after our stay, our lay-in was cut short by several parties of people standing directly outside our door waiting for the lift to arrive, chatting away and having conversations that we could have joined in with from our bed. Giving up on the lay in, we made a coffee and tried watching some TV in bed, but the TV did not work. The screen would come on for 3 seconds before switching straight back off. Wanting to make use of the facilities, we decided to go for a morning swim followed by the sauna. When we arrived at reception, they said that this would be an extra £10 per person!!! Under ‘facilities’ on our booking, it lists things that are additional charges such as massages and beauty treatment etc. It did not say anywhere that the swimming pool and sauna was an additional charge. After discussing this with reception, they allowed us access to the pool and sauna, but it felt very reluctant. After reading other reviews, a lot of other people have pointed out this hidden £10pp charge. When checking out, we were not asked if everything was ok with our stay, so left it at that. When visiting Sheffield in future, we will be giving this hotel a miss, as we don’t think it was great value for money, especially after receiving no reply regarding the discount after booking, and almost being charged an extra £20 to use the pool. It was an OK stay, but nothing like what we expected for the price!

Did not live up to expectation

While it is a lovely looking hotel and in a convenient location my positives for the hotel ends there. At check in was not informed that the pool and gym do not come with the rooms as standard which was not clear at the time of booking nor when checking in. The air conditioning is basically useless despite being on the coldest setting the room was still incredibly warm.

Excellent stay

The St Pauls is genuinely one of our favourite places to stay, location, staff, spa, rooms and views of the peace gardens so we chose to return as a base for s music event we were attending in Rotherham. Unfortunately the first two rooms we were allocated not only looked tired but neither had a working a/c unit, one of them actually broken and covered over with a piece of wood or card. I think it was Scott on reception then moved us to a club room (I am an accord member) with working a/c , quality fixtures and finish and great views. So by the third room we enjoyed the experience we had come to expect and from there everything was great.

OK At The Right Price

We used the Arundel Gate car park where the hotel offers a discount. It is only a five minute walk from the hotel. The position is very central to the city centre and is located in a pleasant pedestrianised area. The room was a good size, but the television was far too small for the room. All the staff were very friendly and professional. The most annoying aspect of the hotel is charging guests £10 for each use of the swimming pool. Needless to say, I didn’t use it.

Dear LauraDaveJames Thank you for reviewing your recent stay with us at the Mercure Hotel in Sheffield great to hear you had a pleasant stay and the location of the hotel was ideal for you. I will pass your comments to the staff and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future. Yours sincerely Mercure Hotel and Spa Sheffield
