The hotel was advertised as well presented but the rooms were so tired, Ceiling peeling, rusty bins, carpets badly stained, room very cold, phone not working and room not very clean especially with covid. The room access cards were very tempremental. The reception was not manned all time so I waited 25 mins one time. You charge £10 a night for car park that you struggle to park in as pillars so tight. I would not recommend a stay to my work colleagues or friends.

Not an attractive hotel from the outside, but well located (and with its own parking) just behind Winchester’s Harry Potter-style high street and just a short walk from King Arthur’s Round Table and other sights. Inside is dated and in need of a refurb. Our room, particularly the carpet, had certainly seen better days but it was large and well-equipped, and reassuringly clean. The highlight of this hotel is the staff, who were friendly, helpful and hard-working. Even our dog was given a warm welcome. The very pleasant young chap on reception when we arrived also served our dinner (large portions but rather bland). The cooked breakfast was excellent and the take-away continental components were cleverly packaged. In all, a convenient, friendly place to stay, worth a lick of paint.

Perfect location and the staff were very friendly but the rooms need a little TLC, lovely and clean but broken bedside lamps,missing and loose furniture handles and stained chairs and footstool!

The Wessex Mercure has perfect location in heart of historic Winchester. Hotel quiet because of Covid but all staff really friendly & helpful. Was upgraded to a lovely room. Decor in communal areas rather bland.

We love this hotel with its fantastic location right in the heart of Winchester next to shops and bars and right on the doorstep of the stunning Cathedral. We had a Cathedral view room with a huge picture window and the view was absolutely stunning. Our room was very clean and tidy containing everything we needed. The staff were exceptionally warm, friendly and helpful and took great care to ensure we had all we needed even thoughtfully seating us in the dining room next to the window so we could enjoy our breakfast with the view. The breakfast was lovely witha varied choice of cooked or continental breakfast. We parked at the hotel. We have stayed here before and will do so again and can recommend it.

Felt safe but because of the regulations the hotel felt a bit austere. It was a cold day (around 2/3 degrees when we checked in). Room window had been left open for safety reasons so the room was freezing cold. It took a long time to warm up.

Good location but rooms not ready when advised they would be. Gave us the keys to the rooms then had to upgrade us as rooms still not ready by 4.30. The upgraded rooms not of an exceptional standard, very tired, the desk in my room was damaged on one corner, the carpet looked dirty. The bed was comfortable. My friends room had to be changed yet again as the toilet was not working and the staff knew it was broken, there were no maintenance staff available to fix the problem. The staff that were in the hotel were working very hard to keep the hotel running but there weren't enough of them. Breakfast, well we all understand the conditions at the moment but my food was cold, I really couldn't be bothered to ask for another plate of food, just a continental breakfast would have been better.

The welcome was excellent and throughout our short stay all the staff were lovely. We were given a room with a nice view and the beds were very comfortable. The WiFI was good and everything worked as it should do. The only downside is that it is all looking very much in need of painting and decorating and is all looks a bit tired as a result. But would I stay again yes definitely but please get the decorators in!!

We've been charged for a car park, which is fine, but when we asked where is the parking, we were first told that we can leave our car outside if we wished to pay parking fee to the council. This felt very un-inviting and very unwelcoming and certainly felt like we were being robbed. We were first charged with parking fee without being asked or given options and then we were suggested to pay more parking fee to the council and not offered information where to park our vehicle. Further, the key wouldn't function several times. The room was cold and remained cold for the remaining hours of our stay. We just asked and somehow urged to do things in a completely disrespectful fashion. And we think that the young man serving was either an underaged working person who had no clue what was he doing or someone whose teenagehood of keeping themselves busy in Tinder (we heard Tinder notifications several times whilst the person/receptionist spokes to us) so they couldn't tell the difference between Tinder chat and a job they were given to deliver. Whenever we needed something this person definitely was physically there but not with his mind and heart, hence we felt totally unwelcomed and his way of asking us to pay sounded like a mugger.

I stayed during Lockdown for work so it was hard to rate the services as none were readily available. Breakfast was a grab and go or taken back to my room. I didn't eat evening meals as they didn't appeal to me. Room wasn't cleaned due to covid. Was clean on arrival, stated in 2 rooms, both were nice, spacious and comfy but in need of some updates. Walls were tired, bathroom had peeling bits on walls, ceilings, bath panals, some furniture was worn, ripped and in need of repair and the carpets were also worn. Staff were friendly and accommodating, although 2 nights I tried to ring reception and there was no response so I had to walk down. Parking was OK but charged 12 a night.
