Comfortable stay but hotel needs a make-over

Elaine M Couples - TripAdvisor review

We stayed as a couple for a weekend in this hotel in September. Parking was a little limited in the car park but we managed to find a space and left the car there all weekend since the hotel is perfectly located within walking distance of the city centre. The main advantage of the hotel is the location and it overlooks Winchester Cathedral, is in walking distance of the Great Hall, Military Museums (which were well worth visiting), restaurants, bars and historic sites. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring Winchester from this location. We also enjoyed a cream tea and the staff were friendly. Special mention to Arthur who served us and was very friendly and helpful. They positioned our table to look outside towards the Cathedral and the chef had prepared a very tasty and fresh cream tea. Breakfast was ok and cereals, breads, yogurts and fruit were provided and hot breakfast options too. From our perspective the buffet breakfast could be enhanced more considering the price we paid for the room. Reception staff were friendly and helpful and gave us a map for us to explore the city. We liked the area on the ground floor where you could sit and have a drink and read etc, lots of natural light there by the spiral staircase. Our room was large and had a small sofa and arm chair too. The TV was large and picture clear and WiFi signal also reliable. The bathroom had a shower over the bath and I had asked if there were rooms with shower cubicles but there was only a disabled room with this provided. Tea/coffee facilities were in the room and were topped up every day. Observations about the room were that it looked a little tired in places, had scuff marks and could also be better cleaned such as around the light switch on the wall. The fabric of the sofa also looked worn. However, the bed was comfortable and we slept well. For the price of £400 for 2 nights we expected a better standard of hotel and it could benefit from fresh if up and renovating to make it look and feel better.

Fantastic as always

Roses A TripAdvisor review

Great service, Marina is very welcoming. Food is great, thanks to the Chief Arthur! Sofia from the bar is super nice! The place is warm and well lit. It’s away from the main road and therefore very quiet. Reception staff is also very polite and welcoming.

We've been using the hotel conference room continuously on a weekly basis and every time the service was great. Marina and Arthur have been looking after us incredibly well and could accommodate our large group to the highest standard every time. Thank you

Well located but very tired room

Stephen P. Couples - Confirmed reviews ALL

One night stay to visit nearby restaurant. Hotel looks dated from both inside and out. Room felt tired and in need of modernisation. Otherwise comfortable.

Dear stephen P., Thanks for leaving your thoughts here, we’ve taken note of your comments and we will discuss this within the team. We hope we can welcome you back to the property in the near future. Kind regards, Eric-Enno Snel General Manager
