I live in Guangzhou with my partner and we frequently book “staycations” at the selection of international four-star hotels in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, probably 6-8 times per year. I first stayed at the Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich in 2018, and have visited at least once or twice a year since that time. If I am completely honest, the rooms themselves, the decor, and most of the amenities in the hotel do feel a bit tired/dated in comparison with other international hotels in this tier nearby, but the main draw for us has always been the executive club. We have always enjoyed the afternoon tea and selection of French pastries/desserts (macarons, canelés, croissants, etc.), and the “pour your own” cocktail hour with small plate service. I also remember when the hotel had “pour your own” mimosas at the club breakfast. These were things that set the Sofitel apart from other similar hotels (and their executive clubs) nearby. In general, I would say the quality of the food, the selection of drinks (both non-alcoholic as well as the wine/spirits during the evening), and the overall service have slowly but surely become worse, to the point where everyone in our group of six this past weekend agreed it wasn’t really something we would come back for any longer. The staff in the club were very friendly and helpful, however they can only do so much. Additionally, when checking in, the gentleman who helped us very kindly upgraded us to a suite, but it was on the 30th floor.. and after leaving both AC units set to 16 degrees Celsius and maximum fan level for over 6 hours, the temperature in the room was still probably 28 degrees or so. When we asked to switch rooms, he tried to “mansplain” to us that, of course, this room is in the top floor, so it will be hotter. No recognition of the fact that the actual air blowing out of the vents in the room was not cool in the slightest (and we suspect the external AC units for the entire floor, or at least our room, were not on). We have been living in China for nearly 10 years now, we have a solid understanding of how air conditioning works. The room we moved to was fine, the AC worked wonderfully, however in the morning I noticed a couple of small bugs on the bedding and at that point I just felt like it was the final sign we needed to not return. I’d like to be very clear that I am not writing this review in the hopes of receiving some kind of compensation, future discount, or anything of that sort. We feel fairly certain that we won’t be returning again as it is clear that the food/service that is offered in the club has been changed intentionally, and not for the better, so we will be spending our money elsewhere.
