Great location and service but not value for money

I have stayed here on a few occasions and for a while have thought the hotel needs a refurbishment as it’s looking dated. However if was very clean and no real issues apart from one of the lifts being broken which meant getting anywhere took ages and there wasn’t an out of order sign to be seen! Obviously the location is ideal for flying out of Gatwick as it’s literally connected to the north terminal. However the price is really poor value for money in my opinion especially given the cost of food and drink as well…. £170 a night and then £30-50 per person for dinner and a drink it really starts to add up. Bar service was not very good and wasn’t clear if it was table service or not, our drinks got spilt by the waiting staff. So For one room with our food and drink it came to £278 for a single night

Start of Holiday

Thank you for giving us an amazing start to our holiday. The upgrade to the executive floor was unexpected and appreciated. Margo in the lounge was absolutely amazing a true bright star and we look forward to seeing her again.

Overnight stay and holiday car park

Comfortable and clean ( and quiet room) for our overnight stay prior to early morning flight from Gatwick. Covered walkway to airport so no need to go outside in the morning. Found it difficult to understand the car park so perhaps this could be made clearer ( better signage) as I went round twice and ended up with two tickets! Also. At park was very very busy so a struggle to find a space. Although a long queue to check in all done quickly and efficiently. Had to leave car keys and we did ask if we could hand them in the next morning as wanted to drop overnight case in car. Also be aware no lift in car park so best dropping passengers and cases before parking up.at the drop off stop. same when you collect. On return easy to walk from airport under the walkway to the hotel- collect keys- left hub is with the cases and I fetched the car round. All in all would recommend this hotel- friendly staff. We stopped for something to eat before arriving at the hotel- the restaurant looked very very busy so just be aware of this.

Change for the better?

Sofitel Gatwick is a very good hotel and has just undergone a significant, and welcome, refurbishment. First impressions were good but the new bedroom layout was clearly some arty-crafty designer's view with no regard to practicality and customer needs. An opportunity wasted.

Impractical renovation

Unfortunately the renovation of rooms has been very disappointing and from our perspective impracticable. Tea making facilities were located on top of safe in wardrobe( no plugs there anyway) which requires you to find a plug. The original table has now been removed and replaced by a small units consisting of top and one shelf however the plug from the kettle does not reach this so you boil kettle on floor/ or on window cill behind curtains. As there is no dressing table with mirror behind, the mirror is now located at the entrance by bathroom door with no light above and to dry your hair you need to use plug on floor.( no shelf there either). Bedside table is now a small shelf between twin beds with fixed telephone taking up most of space . No drawer or other place to put things. The wardrobe is tiny and hanging space includes a ironing board and safe and fridge which limits what you can hang up. Bathroom is treacherous as there are no hand rails and jet black marble tiles which are slippery and the combination bath / shower over has curved bottom with no non slip surface and high side to access/ egress( nothing to hold on to). Shower fitting was leaking. As the tiles are black the mirror above the sink which is lit requires you to do hair whicch is impossible as if you have dark hair this merges with the background tiles. Can’t see to brush hair. The beds include a deep mattress topper and heavy duvet which are exceptionally hot. We have stayed at the Sofitel Gatwick North for 60-70 times( possibly more). The previous rooms were fine- although a walk in shower woukd be better however these are not available t all at this location. We expressed our disappointment to the reception staff and it is clear that whoever designed the ? Upgrade has never stayed in a hotel before. Absolutely disasterous and in fortunately after many years we will sadly now check in to the Hampton hotel which is equally well located and practical bedrooms from what we have experienced including walk in showers.

Convenient but not luxury!

Room super small. Not even a desk! Bathroom door was so narrow I kept banging into the corner of the wall (ouch) on my way out. Room menu extremely limited, but the food was tasty when it arrived. The bed was appalling, shaped like a saggy banana which I guess the management had tried to fix with a down topper-it didn’t do the trick! And there was hair in my sink and toothpaste on the wall behind it. Overall, very convenient as super-close but not a patch on the Sofitel at Heathrow and I’ll be staying in the premier inn next time.

Convenient place to stay overnight

Very convenient and comfortable with generally helpful staff. Restaurant not so good despite decent service - our fish and chips were overcooked and dry and expensive as was the breakfast ; we only had a continental breakfast but were charged for the full English - we didn't notice this until we arrived home and checked the bill.

No club on 8th floor

The check in was good with friendly reception staff, and the room was of the usual high standard. But the club room on the 8th floor was closed so Canapés and drinks were served in the cocktail bar Le Ciel on the balcony between 6 till 8 . As I would normally go to the club for drinks between 8 till 11 this was annoying

We booked the Sofitel for a night's stay prior to flying on holiday because of the amazing experience of staying in an Executive room and having access to the wonderful Millesime Lounge overlooking the runway from the 8th floor. We had enjoyed canapés and drinks the last time until 1030/1100 pm. I booked the same again to surprise and treat my wonderful partner. The evening was supposed to be very special. Prior to arriving we had an email reminder about our stay and inviting us to check in online. I did. On arrival I asked what time the lounge was open from and was very disappointed to be told the Millisime lounge was closed and a champagne bar would be serving canapés 6-8pm and be open for drinks until 10pm. I suggested that perhaps they could have advised their guests of this by email giving them the option to switch rooms or amend their booking prior to arrival. We walked into the Champagne bar only to be told by the barman that he didn't have our room number on his list for reserved tables. He told me I had to register with reception. Reception at that time had at least 12 people waiting to check in but not wanting to disappoint my partner, I joined the queue to wait. 15 minutes later I was at the front of the queue and spoke to reception. To my utter amazement I was told I didn't have to register and the barman was wrong. She tried to call the bar on the phone but couldn't get through to walked over there. I also double checked it was open till 10 and was, again, told yes. We walked into the champagne bar and took a seat at a table. By this time it was 6.25 so we ordered a drink each and took a few canapés each to enjoy. We enjoyed the next hour and a bit until being surprised yet again that the bar was closing at 8pm! I questioned this and was told by the barman yes 8pm. I went down to reception again to complain as I was previously told twice it was 10pm. A lovely lady who appeared to be in charge of reception came to apologise. She said they'd only opened the week before (as if that should have had any bearing on their service and communications). I suggested that they could have advised me of this before arriving and communication could have been so much better around the bar closing time. She apologised again and offered me £25 off our bill for that night which I grudgingly agreed to. Returning to the bar to finish our drinks the atmosphere was spoiled even more by the cleaner hoovering the carpets clean and around our feet while we were still seated. We finished the evening in the main bar. Not what I had planned and certainly not enjoyable. Service and team communication severely lacking. I hope you improve everything for next time, otherwise next time will be the last.

Disappointing

We stayed here with a dinner, b and B package, which I would never have again. The food was appalling, both at dinner and breakfast. I know the hotel only returned to normal on 1 March, but it was appalling and no way represented a 4 star. If you are considering the meal package don't do it.

Used for first time when flying from Gatwick. Usual park & fly now no longer available so gave Sofitel a go. Parking right by Hotel (signage regarding dropping off could have been clearer). Efficient check-in. Nice room, comfortable bed and very clean. Would definitely use again.

Excellent hotel with very helpful staff. Nothing too much trouble. Excellent room, clean and well equipped for a three day stay. No aircraft noise. Buffet breakfast had everything you could imagine. Bar area was relaxing and had a good open space, complying with Covid-19 distancing rules. Will stay there again when visiting London or surrounding area.

Poor value with limited services

I think the hotel must be very quiet but I was very disappointed with their service. I had booked a room with access to the Club lounge by this was closed. No alternative was offered and I was still charged for breakfast, which I would have taken in the lounge if it had been open. The suite had a small bathroom with only a shower, which I find unusual for a suite. No bathrobes or face clothes were provided.

We stayed on the 31st of March 2021 for the test and rest at a price of £209. They invoiced me for that amount but I did not get a credit card receipt. When I checked my credit card statement they charged me £309. I have emailed them three times with no response to find out why. I am now overseas so it’s difficult to deal with it

Not as expected

We have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions with no problems but this time our sleep quality was very poor. The room was so hot and the feather duvet was hot and heavy. Also there was a feather mattress topper which was lumpy and uncomfortable. End result was a maximum of only a few hours of sleep. The bathroom floor was dirty and needed cleaning. Fortunately we ordered breakfast early so we left as soon as we could. We travel as much as we are able but I would definitely think twice before staying again.

Had to be changed to 3 different rooms

When we arrived, we had to be moved 2 times. The first room we were given was half clean. The bathroom was dirty. There was garbage everhwere. The second room was filled with ciggarette smoke. When we went to give in the test the front desk was extremely rude and took a long time to come help us even though there was no one there.

Good sized rooms with all the accessories you would require for your stay. Bed was large and very comfortable. Breakfast was very good. large choice to cover all tastes. Staff were as always friendly and polite.

This is a really excellent Hotel. An ideal way to start your holiday with a night in the hotel and an excellent breakfast before your flight. Check in staff were very friendly and efficient and we could choose whether we wanted a room on a lower or higher floor. Could not fault room for cleanliness and convenience.

Good room, comfortable bed, poor reception

Regular user of the hotel and I always look forward to the very comfortable beds but the check in experience was poor. I waited at the premium desk and was completely ignored by the staff. I ended up having to queue behind people who had arrived after myself to check in.

Very Disappointed

I have always booked my stay at the Sofitel for more than 15 years now . This was one of my first stays where I was totally disappointed with the room . I paid 147 pounds for a nights stay and ordered dinner via room service . The credit card machine did not function as the WIFI was poor in the room . Our towels had holes in them and were very old . The toilet did not flush properly . I am asthmatic and I noted there was dust in the room ( carpet /curtains ?) and sneezed all night long . To top it off , only one lift was working and it was impossible to get down to the lobby with our suitcases the following morning . It took us almost half an hour as it took ages and when it arrived we could not take it as was filled with guest and suitcases from the other floors . I do . believe it has become old fashioned and needs an upgrade and for what one pays, things should work efficiently like the WIFI , toilets and elevators .
