We recently stayed at Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa in January with our family (two adults and two children aged six and under). We had specifically booked a standard room with two queen-sized beds to ensure a comfortable and safe setup for our young kids. Upon check-in, however, we were given a different room with one queen bed and a bunk bed. We immediately rejected the room after stepping inside, as bunk beds pose a clear fall risk for young children. After a long international flight, this was the last issue we expected to deal with — especially at a five-star hotel charging upwards of $500 per night. The reception manager informed us the hotel was fully booked and initially could not assist. While we understand that hotels operate at high occupancy, being fully booked should not result in guests being placed in a room configuration they did not reserve. We were told the day manager would contact us the following day regarding compensation, but no compensation was ever discussed or offered. To make matters worse, the room also had a noticeable musty, mouldy smell, which we reported immediately. The only positive outcome was that the hotel eventually moved us back to the original room configuration we had booked. Once this was resolved, the remainder of the trip was enjoyable. Overall, while the resort facilities and location were lovely, the check-in experience and lack of follow-up regarding compensation were disappointing and not what we expect from a five-star property.

Staff were amazing as always, so warm, welcoming and helpful. Service was fantastic. We try to go to the Sofitel every year, this year we stayed half the time at another Resort because of the pool renovations. We didn't realise the massive and loud construction site was happening concurrently which made for a very "different" stay. What is usually the adults only pool area was totally overloaded with kids throwing footballs etc. which is understandable given the renovations but I don't feel there was any compensation for the sub-standard experience.
