Over all a good experience, nice food, good service.

A brief stay as our holiday tour was terminated due to the corinova virus pandemic with Vietnam closing its borders. We were treated exceptionally well by all the staff and our thanks to the hotel manager for offering his personal assistance. The restaurant we used offered outstanding food in a pleasant surrounding. A good range of food was always presented at breakfast. Overall a short but very pleasant stay. We look forward to returning once the world gets back to normal.

I have wanted to stay at the hotel for 40 years and have finally done so. I wont be coming back. Really hard to see what all the fuss is about. Sure it has history but the rooms were bland, the bathrooms spacious but impractical and the level of service inconsistent. Bar staff at the poolside restaurant were exceptionally good, food was excellent but breakfast was a buffet (a personal pet hate in a 5 star hotel!!) which could have been anywhere. Possibly the most disappointing aspect was the fact that all the guests looked the same. Old, white and wealthy - should not have been surprised.

I enjoyed my stay here. My only complaint was that the bed was extremely hard.

Our experience was impacted by the rapidly changing circumstances due to the CoVID-19 world wide pandemic disease. Nevertheless our stay at the Sofitel was a most enjoyable experience, the location facilities were excellent, the very courteous and helpful.

We spent time touring Hanoi before joining the Backroads bicycle tour. We loved our stay in the Hotel and found everyone to be very friendly and helpful with restaurant recommendations, etc.

We initially had 3 night stay and then a further 1 night stay - we found the restaurants, food, staff- well presented, very friendly, rooms very inviting - loved our experiences and stay here.

It was our first time to Hanoi, and staying at such a prestigious hotel. The staff in all departments were lovely and always knew to acknowledge guest presence. The guest room was kept clean always, with no issues. The COVID-19 hotel lockdown on 9 March 2020 (Monday) was indeed unfortunate and unpredictable. It is understood that the lockdown was enforced by the government doing the early morning hours on that day. As such, it would have been better if there was a notification note/letter slipped under the guest room door, to provide an initial idea of the current situation. As we were supposed to the check-out that morning around 10am, it was only clear to us that we couldn't leave when we approached the reception/for breakfast at 9am. The external company that confirmed our airport departure transfer for that morning, did not wish to entertain our plea to refund/amend the arrangement as it was within less than an hour to the arranged pick-up time.

The history of the hotel from its French origins, as a host for various diplomatic missions during the 1970s, to the present day is well preserved and curated. But the hotel is more than magnificently updated historical luxury, the staff service is remarkable. For example, it started raining quite heavily while my wife and I were doing the yoga class on the undercover outdoor terrace near the pool. As the class ended a staff member quietly arrived with two umbrellas for my wife and I.

Firstly, we had difficulty getting a refund for our non-refundable rate even though we had Corona issues. Most other hotel chains and airlines had been more receptive to cancellations. Thankfully we were allowed to change names and dates. The room itself had a tiny window with no view. This was in spite of very low occupancy. I feel there could have been an opportunity for a better room. Room service came into our room once without any knock. They just walked right in when my wife and I had no clothes on. Knocking is basic etiquette. When we went for breakfast we hose to sit outside. It took a while for someone to bring cutlery even though, they sat us there. Eventually I had to get it from another table. Bathroom toiletries are very limited. I haved lived in Vietnam for 12 years of which 8 in Hanoi and have regularly used Metropole for business, friends and family. It continues to be a wonderful and charismatic property but was led down by how we were handled.

Very agreeable (second) stay in a lovely hotel with excellent service. The rooms in the old building are lovely but the bathrooms are looking a little tired.
