The room was nice and clean. The airport shuttle service is convenient. The AC kept working even though I turned off. The thermostate does not work either. The cost was too high. I would stay nearer to the airport at less cost.

Do not be fooled by the glowing global Google reviews — I suspect Sofitel Algiers is living off the nostalgia of its glory days (maybe sometime in the 80s or 90s). On paper, it’s a five-star luxury hotel. In reality, it’s more like a French version of The Shining — and not in a good way. The location? Fantastic. The view? Lovely… if you’re lucky enough to face the gardens. The rest? Think heritage hotel meets post-conference fatigue. Rooms smell like cigarette smoke mixed with overenthusiastic toilet spray. Basic functions — lights, plugs, hot water — seem to work on rotation. Many of us became accidental experts in room relocation. The price-versus-reality gap is the real five-star shocker here. Housekeeping is… interpretive. The concierge is friendly in spirit, but getting help often felt like an episode of Fawlty Towers (third time here — still not in a good way). That said, the bones of something great are still there. The lobby doubles as a local nightlife hub — colourful, loud, and unintentionally fascinating. Would I stay again? Yes — mostly because there aren’t many other options in Algiers. Do they have work to do? Absolutely — they’re decades behind. Start offering “historic hotel adventure” packages and tighten up service and info about Algiers — then maybe this old star could shine again.

This level of service — including an overcharging, disrespectful managerial behavior, and complete lack of accountability — is particularly disappointing coming from Sofitel. A formal complaing via email was sent to the Genral Manager.
