Poor service and prob being racist

Poor service. They didn't have 2 room keys to give to 2 people staying in the same room and said they are "fully booked" and so they dindnt have spare keys . Weirdest thing I have ever heard. We came in a group of 35 people and everyone got only 1 key to their room. Well... They need to keep 2 room keys by default for every room !!! Also, apparently there was some reservation system to use their pool, which was again very wierd. They didnt give us time slot to se pool while they have slot to some other people in our group. We felt a bit like racism at this place. Never using this hotel again

We checked in at 3pm, the hotel was extremely warm. There was an Asian gentleman throwing up in the lobby. I found the spa facilities very nice and modern however being only allowed 30 minutes to enjoy the facilities as a family of 4 wasn't enough. The welcome drinks vouchers caused confusion as it states one drink pp in your room however the bar attendant would not honour this. The mattress was rock hard. The location is great and that's why we booked this hotel.

We arrived on Saturday 6th July 2024 to start our well earned holiday. Unfortunately we received devastating news that my husband's nan had 24-48 hours left to live and so we had to immediately pack and return to Essex. Due to the grossly unfair policy that Novotel York have in place, we could not be refunded or rebooked for another date. We were told at the point of leaving that the reservation team were due into the office at 12pm and we would then hear from them - we did not hear anything. We then telephoned the next day to ensure that the reservation team had received our details and the reasons for returning home to which we were informed by the reception manager that we would only receive a refund of £48.00 for the car parking charges paid in advance. To date we have not received the refund, despite giving my account details. The reception manager had very little compassion and despite explaining the situation, we were told to have a "good rest of our day". Clearly no attention had been paid to our telephone conversation after explaining that our family member was gravely ill. A serious review of the policies in place needs to happen with training given to your staff as to how to handle a situation like this. My husband's nan passed away the same week and what was already a very upsetting and stressful situation was made worse by how this has been handled. We will not be returning to Novotel York based on our experience.

We had a good 3 nights stay. The location is good, within walking distance to the main places you want to visit etc. Room was clean. The new swimming pool was really nice and it is good you can book slots for it.
