The Sofitel in Broadbeach on Australia’s Gold Coast was comfortable and the staff were fantastic but the hotel is definitely showing its age and looking a little tired in parts. The good parts that truly reflected a 5 star image: the staff, the wonderful coffee service at breakfast, the facilities (good swimming pools, a decent gym). The not so good that drag down the rating: worn furniture in the breakfast restaurant, bathrooms that need updating (including a very small shower cubicle). The fact that the hotel has a gaming machine lounge off the main lobby also detracts from any attempt at an upmarket atmosphere. The hotel is well located - immediately above a shopping centre with Woolworths and a large choice of cafes and restaurants. It is also about a 15 minute walk to the huge Pacific Fair shopping centre and close to the beach ( a few hundred metres)

We attended as part of the PFA conference. The only complaint was the slowness of the lifts. At least one lift was not working.

When we got there the room wasn't ready. Then we went for a walk and tried to kill time had to wait 2 hours we have a 3 year old with us so was hard and after driving 4 hours In a car to get there. We got back to the counter at 3.30 still not ready so went to the bar and waited there. Once the room was finally ready around 4pm. We got there and the room was too small with 1 double bed. We asked for a king as we have a child there is no way my wife and I can sleep with our son in a double. Also the room was smaller then advertised. I rang straight away and the counter person said that's all we have a available sorry I said no it isn't I want our room that we paid for please he said ok I'll talk to am after and ring you back. After wait for 20 minutes i decided to go to the reception and confront him as we just wanted to have showers and meet our friends for dinner which we were run ing out of time. Being almost 5pm. Anyway he finally sorted it out after I told him in person that I don't want to stay here and he still tried to say that's all the rooms they have I said you still have rooms available online. Then I said I don't want to stay here then he soem how magicallly gave us a our proper room. And 2 free drinks well I don't think 2 free drinks was enough to be honest. But definitely not happy with the stay.

No mini bar Difficulty with accessing wifi No streaming options for movies or ease to stream from own device All elevators broke during checkout - no communication from staff - patrons were required to carry luggage up and down fire escapes Telephone to call front desk did not work for entire stay No decent seating in lobby Tired interiors that need to be updated Really dated (bad) art and interior Needs a massive cash injection and facelift to be rated a 5 star hotel - it is currently like a 3 star hotel
