Extremely Poor Check-In Experience

I can completely understand how busy a hotel can be in Summer and the 3pm check in rule. I arrived at 10am (fully pre-paid), I had completed an online check-in and spoke to reception and politely asked if anything comes up before 3pm that would be great whilst paying the security deposit for the room at the desk. I came back to the hotel at 1pm, no room available yet. Asked reception at 2pm - still no room. By 3pm, the entire foyer was completely full with single line queue for one receptionist on the counter at the time of check-in. By 3pm each person checking in at reception in the queue was now getting their rooms ahead of me - whilst I had been sitting down next to reception waiting 5 hours for my room. The entire foyer was full of disgruntled guests who were seriously underwhelmed by their experience - it wasn't just me. It made for a very bad environment. I made myself known again to reception and by 330pm I was given a room on the 5th floor overlooking the garden despite booking a RiverView room two months ago. The room had no River view at all. I've stayed at the Sofitel in Broadbeach 5-10 times and can confidently say that was the worst room in the hotel. I wouldn't go to the effort of reviewing the hotel if this was a Mantra, IBIS or Meriton, but the fact that this is a 5 Star hotel and a premium brand, it's probably important you get feedback of this nature to improve for future guests. I'm not sure I have the confidence to return unfortunately.

1. I booked for 25 and 26 December 2024 in Oct 2024 via phone call to Sofitel Broadbeach 2. I rang Sofitel Broadbeach on 25 Nov 2024 after noticing a transaction on my AMEX. A long conversation revealed Sofitel Broadbeach had messed up my booking and I was now INCORRECTLY showing as a 'no show' for 25 November. 3. The reimbursement process has been glacial. 4. My initial booking was for a twin room (my 25 yo daughter and myself)- this was not available when I arrived at Sofitel Christmas Day. It took a considerable amount of arguing to get a roll away bed beside a king bed - we could not move around in the room. I was told 'we are very busy'. Lovely relaxing Christmas! 4. At no point was I offered anything to acknowledge or mitigate the impact of Sofitel's stuff up on my Christmas. 5. The fridge did NOT work. I complained - nothing happened. Like others I purchased ice from Woolworths and kept in bathtub. Who can afford a glass of wine poolside at Sofitel on Christmas Day (refer to point 6. below). I drank nothing but tap water! 6. The nonsense about the legal requirement to buy 'knife and fork' food if ordering a drink at the pool was embarrassing. I have stayed at Sofitel Broadbeach many times over Christmas - never before has management enforced the 1992 legislation relating to this 'rule'. BTW management were referring to the rule as new legislation (totally untrue). I overheard many arguments - much damage to Sofitel brand. 7. Too many young children and babies in pool wearing non waterproof swimming nappies. Yuck! 8. An expensive and poor-quality holiday. 9. It looks like COVID wrecked Sofitel Broadbeach - very sad.

I’ve stayed at many Sofitels being a Diamond Accor member, but this hotel I’m my opinion is well below the standard of a Sofitel.
