Literally meaning “the city in the north of Shen River”, Shenyang boasts a population of 7.2 million and is one of China’s most important political, economic and cultural destinations. As the host city of the 2006 International Horticultural Exposition and venue for soccer at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Shenyang will soon be the focus of world-wide attention. A famed old city with more than 2,000 years of history, Shenyang is the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty and is home to many fascinating cultural relics including the Shenyang Imperial Palace, Fuling and Zhaoling Tombs and the world heritage listed Mukden Palace. Located in the centre of the city is Zhongshan Square featuring one of China’s largest statues of Chairman Mao. Shenyang is also famous for its natural beauty with Strange Slope and Qipan Mountain popular photo stops amongst tourists. With plenty of pubs, clubs and karaoke bars located throughout the city, Shenyang is not short on nightlife.
