What's On in August: River Crossings, Flower Parades, and a Month-Long Stage

August sits at two extremes at once. Across the Northern Hemisphere, this is peak summer. It’s the last, fullest stretch of the European holiday season, when cities empty of locals and coastlines fill with visitors.

In East Africa, it's also the dramatic high point of one of the natural world's greatest spectacles, as millions of wildebeest attempt to cross a river thick with crocodiles.

Meanwhile, deep in the Southern Hemisphere, Colombia's second city spends ten days covered in flowers, and the Andes are still deep in their ski season.

It's a month that rewards very different kinds of travel: the spontaneous and the meticulously planned, the wild and the deeply cultural. These are the events worth travelling for in August.

What it is: The dramatic peak of the Great Migration, one of the largest and most spectacular wildlife movements on Earth, as more than a million wildebeest, alongside zebra and gazelle, attempt to cross the crocodile-filled Mara River between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara.

Where: The Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, particularly around the Mara River crossing points in the Mara Triangle and northern conservancies.

When: The migration itself runs for much of the year, but the dramatic river crossings peak in August, continuing into September.

Why it's worth travelling for: This is nature at its most unscripted and intense. Herds gathering at the riverbank, building courage, then plunging in en masse while crocodiles and waiting predators turn the crossing into one of the most dramatic wildlife events anywhere in the world. Unlike a scheduled festival, no two crossings are the same, which is exactly what draws safari-goers back year after year.

Plan around it: Crossings are driven entirely by rainfall and instinct, not a calendar, so timing can never be guaranteed. Budgeting at least four days in the region significantly improves the odds of witnessing one. Because of the popularity of peak season, the best camps and lodges near key crossing points are often booked out 12 months or more in advance.

What it is: Medellín's biggest annual celebration and one of Colombia's most significant cultural events. Ten days honouring the city's flower-growing heritage, culminating in the Desfile de Silleteros, where flower farmers from the mountain village of Santa Elena carry elaborate floral arrangements through the city streets.

Where: Medellín, Colombia, with events across the city and in the surrounding Santa Elena countryside where the silleteros (flower carriers) live and work.

When: Held annually in late July into early August. In 2026, the ten-day festival runs from 31 July to 9 August, with the signature Silleteros parade on the final day.

Why it's worth travelling for: The Desfile de Silleteros alone draws roughly a million spectators lining the streets, but the wider festival is just as compelling. Classic car parades, open-air concerts across dozens of neighbourhood stages, orchid exhibitions at the Botanical Garden, and a citywide atmosphere Medellín locals describe as the biggest party in Colombia.

Plan around it: Accommodation books out well ahead of the festival, particularly around the Silleteros parade weekend. Visiting Santa Elena itself, ideally with a guide who can introduce the silletero families directly, adds real depth beyond the parade in the city.

What it is: The world's largest performing arts festival. The Edinburgh Fringe is an open-access celebration of comedy, theatre, dance, circus, cabaret, and music, with no selection committee, meaning any performer can register a show and take part.

Where: Venues across Edinburgh, Scotland, from grand theatres to converted pub back rooms, running alongside the more formal Edinburgh International Festival and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

When: Runs for three weeks in August each year. In 2026, Edinburgh Festival Fringe takes place from 7 to 31 August.

Why it's worth travelling for: With thousands of shows across hundreds of venues, the Fringe turns the entire city into a stage, and its open-access format means today's unknown performer might be tomorrow's household name. Many major comedy and theatre careers were launched here. The city's atmosphere during the festival, with street performers filling the Royal Mile and every venue buzzing well into the night, is unlike anywhere else in the world during August.

Plan around it: Accommodation across Edinburgh sells out and prices rise sharply during the festival, so book as early as possible. Popular shows can sell out too, particularly for weekend evening slots, so it's worth booking known names ahead while leaving room to discover something unexpected on the day.

• Peak European summer continues, with much of the continent, particularly France and Italy, observing Ferragosto in mid-August, when many businesses close as locals join the summer holiday exodus.

• Southern Hemisphere ski season continues, with the Andes in Argentina, Chile, and New Zealand ski season still in full swing.
