I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Mantra Club Croc Airlie Beach. I booked directly through the Accor website, and my booking confirmation clearly stated that payment could be made at the hotel during check-in. I repeatedly checked the Accor website but could not find any link or option to pay in advance. On the 7th, I received an email demanding immediate payment and warning that my booking might otherwise be cancelled. However, the reservation number in that email did not match the number shown in my official Accor booking, and the payment link directed me to a website that was not the Accor website. As I could not verify whether the email or website was genuine, I replied and explained that my Accor confirmation stated I could pay at check-in. The following day, while I was at Brisbane Airport preparing to fly to the hotel, I received a call from an unfamiliar number demanding immediate payment. Again, I could not verify the caller’s identity. As we were overseas visitors and English is not our first language, I called the hotel directly and asked whether Chinese-language assistance was available, but it was not. The staff member told me in English that I had to pay immediately, either online or by telephone, or my booking could be cancelled. I searched the Accor website again for a long time but still could not find any payment option. I then emailed the hotel to confirm that I was definitely travelling there and asked them not to cancel my booking, as doing so while I was already on my way would have caused serious inconvenience. The hotel replied that I could only pay by telephone. This was an unfamiliar payment method for me and, given the earlier suspicious-looking email and phone call, it made me very uncomfortable. I was also boarding my flight and could not make another call. I explained that my flight would land at 3:00 pm and that I would call and pay immediately after landing, but I received no further reply. I eventually paid by telephone as soon as I arrived. The entire process was unnecessarily stressful. Instead of receiving clear assistance or a secure payment option through the official Accor website, I felt that I was repeatedly pressured for payment and threatened with cancellation. The stay itself was equally disappointing. I appreciate that the front desk staff were friendly, but the hotel offered very little service considering that we paid several hundred dollars per night and stayed for four nights. There were no disposable slippers in the room, and none were available from reception, which was surprising for a beach resort. Guests had to take their used bath towels to reception to exchange them, place their rubbish bins outside the room themselves, and there was no regular room cleaning. The room was also very dark, damp and had a strong musty smell. It was advertised as a large suite, but in reality it appeared to be two standard hotel rooms, each with a large bed, joined by an internal connecting door. This felt very different from what had been presented in the listing and was extremely disappointing. The location was also inconvenient. The hotel is some distance from the town centre, beach and marina, so we frequently needed to take taxis. Public buses were infrequent and unreliable. This was my first experience staying at an Accor hotel in Australia, and unfortunately it was completely different from the standard I had expected. The four-night stay offered extremely poor value for money and made our holiday far less enjoyable. After this experience, I will be much more cautious about choosing an Accor hotel in the future.
