Amazing hotel, beautiful grounds, wonderful staff!

Sarah B TripAdvisor review

Our family of four (mom, dad, daughters 18 and 20) stayed in one of the William Holden cottages for three nights in December. It was absolutely amazing, a once in a lifetime experience, just totally phenomenal. Coming from the U.S., the prices felt very reasonable for the level of service and the quality of the hotel. The room: Clean, fresh, comfortable, quiet, excellent sleep. We loved sitting on the patio and watching the baboons and birds with Mount Kenya in the background. The grounds are impeccable, so it's just lovely to sit and enjoy the scenery. The living room was perfect for us. We enjoyed having a nice warm fire when we came home from dinner and sitting in the living room together playing games before we all retired to our bedrooms. The shower temperature was a bit tricky to adjust--it seemed very hot to me!--but otherwise not a single complaint about the rooms. The food: The board package was a little confusing. Confirm which package you have before you arrive. The buffet is pretty standard Fairmont food, so if you are familiar with the brand, you won't be surprised. I appreciated the variety of options, and especially loved the broth (seriously!!!!) and the traditional Kenyan food section. Excursions: We did a nature walk from the hotel into Mt. Kenya national forest. This was an incredible experience. We had a nature guide, an armed guard from the hotel, and an armed park ranger. But it never felt dangerous or weird or awkward. The armed guard and the ranger were lovely and knew so much about the plants and animal tracks and bird songs, it felt like we had three nature guides. We saw lots of tracks but no animals. This was totally fine for us, because it was all so exciting and beautiful, but I felt like the nature guide was disappointed he couldn't show us an elephant or rhino. We also did the Ngare Ndare excursion. The armed ranger who accompanied us to the waterfall was also absolutely wonderful, a wealth of knowledge about plants and animals and birds. He was engaging and friendly. The waterfall itself is beautiful, it looks just like it does in all the pictures. The water is cold, but the hotel guide met us there with towels so I could jump in. There was some confusion about the park fees though, and I mentioned to the concierge that it would be better if the hotel just covered all the costs and built them into the fee we paid for the excursion. It's a decent drive to get to the park, and while it's so interesting to see the villages and towns along the way, it does take a while. I might skip this excursion if you have limited time at the hotel. We did the horseback riding safari, which was incredibly cool. The animals are not afraid of the horses, so you can get very close. The two guides were friendly and professional, and we felt safe and well cared for the entire time. We also did the biking safari, which I did not enjoy. It's quite difficult to bike on the paths in the reserve, so if you are not comfortable on off-road biking I might skip this one. Staff: Everyone was friendly and professional and helpful. Anytime we asked anyone anything, they seemed to drop everything to help us. Tipping: We are New Yorkers and expect to tip to reward good service. The tipping situation was a little confusing, and I would recommend figuring out before you get there how much you want to tip for things so that you can be prepared. You can also ask the concierge for guidance. Bring cash, there are no ATMs. Necessities: There isn't a little store or market to buy things like suntan lotion or Tylenol. I'm sure the concierge could help you acquire something from town, but I would have appreciated having a self-serve shop for essentials on site.

The place is fantastic but I was disappointed with the attitude of the manager. One of our party had a burst hot water bottle and we were told that it sometimes happened and that we should have told them immediately! At night the hot water was boiling then in the morning it seemed more controllable, I was told that this was because I didn’t know how to use it, a bit odd as I did exactly the same in the morning and it worked. The phone didn’t work but someone fixed it. We had to ask to see the manager twice before he came.

Best experience in a long time. The cottage, the view, people.. the list goes on. The experience in the Animal Orphanage nearby was also eye opening. The view of Mount Kenya from the room, the temperature, quality of the rooms and service all add up to a great break between two safaris we are taking.

Spectacular

We visited in February a time when the rest of the country (Kenya) is so hot. The weather here was so welcoming and the stay was memorable. There are so many activities and you will realise time flies so fast at this destination. The staff are very friendly and professional. I would recommend all age groups for a great refreshing stay!

An Amazing Experience with Exceptional Service!

I had a great time! The staff were amazing and fast, quick to help, and always available everywhere. The place itself is incredible, with a large, well-maintained area and a wonderful animal orphanage that adds a special touch. The buffet was also fantastic, offering a great variety of delicious food. Highly recommend!
