We have visited this hotel for more than 30 years. We’ve hosted events at the Empress, watched it move through many changes, construction projects, and improvements. This time, I brought a dear friend for her first visit to Victoria. When prompted before the visit, I accepted the extra fee for a higher floor room. When we arrived, the upgrade was not available. Our harbor view room was not clean. The inside of the bathroom door had black finger prints and the molding on the door hadn’t been cleaned for some time. I cleaned it and left black marks on a towel. The window sill was also dirty. In the refrigerator was someone else’s uncovered left over salmon dinner. The smell filled the room. I notified the staff and was offered a bottle of red wine. We scheduled tea before coming and enjoy the meal at a window table. But the combo of bar, restaurant, tea in the same room is less than desirable. I’m sure you experience that, too. Sadly, the outdoor veranda and fire pits were closed on 2 beautiful sunny days. I was told that the veranda and bar service were unavailable due to construction. Overall, it was a very disappointing stay.

I enjoyed my stay in most respects. The staff were friendly and helpful. The facility is classy, though extensive renovation work required me to pass through a work zone several times per day. My only real complaint is about noise. - On my first night, I was awakened in the middle of the night by water dripping noises (it was raining) - The first morning, while I was working in the room, there was heavy construction happening outside my window - debris from demolition work was loaded into carts and lifted by crane. - On my last night, I was awakened at 4 am by what sounded like heavy equipment or furniture being moved somewhere on an upper floor. - The other two nights I had no problem with noise.

We were upgraded to a beautiful harbour view room. It was perfect! The bengal lounge was amazing. The food and drinks and service from i believe was Micheal- was outstanding.
