We booked a Junior Suite with a walk in shower. when we arrived the only 2 junior suites they have contain a bath with a shower over. As this was acceptable we accepted a privilege room, only to find the fridge did not work. Having brought drinks with us we asked for the fridge to be replaced. Following numerous conversations, about moving us to another room the follwoing day with a working fridge and requesting buckets of ice twice, which eventually arrived 45 minutes after asking. The rooms have just a wardrobe to put clothes in. No drawers to put socks, underwear etc in. Safe is in the bottom of the wardrobe making it difficult to see into. The hotel is worn the reception staff look untidy in un-ironed shirts. Joe from reception was lovely and tried her best to help.

Lots of room for improvement

From the outset of this review, I would like to make it very clear that we were very grateful and honoured for the free upgrade upon check in and would like to make note of the exemplary service that Mr David Crockford offered us when we were encountering a number of issues with our room. He is a credit to your hotel and indeed your company group as a whole. The hotel location is great for the city centre and the public transport links but this comes at a cost. The noise within the room we were located in (Junior Suite, room 110, directly above the main entrance on the first floor) was unbearable at times. Traditional sash windows are not designed for modern life and peoples ignorance and rudeness, so we were treated to an awful nights sleep thanks to the noise from passing pedestrians, the deep bass music from the local pub and rowdy guests entering the premises late at night / early in the morning. The room was not properly cleaned and we had to request the reception staff remove the previous occupants rubbish while also having to ask the reception staff to replenish the refreshments that were supposed to be in the room and were not. Some of these refreshments were also not available due to "delivery problems" (Nescafe coffee pods for example). The room was very spacious but slightly tired and dated but the noise from the neighbouring room was also quite loud. The beds were very firm and quite uncomfortable so this is something else that could be improved. The public realm of the hotel is clean and tidy and quite grand making you feel like you've stepped back in time (in a good way!) and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Its a lot to ask, but modernising and sound proofing these higher end rooms is a must if you expect people to pay good money to stay in them. I'd be slightly more irate about my stay if I had paid the prices being asked for these suites compared to the quality of my stay in it.

Great team. average hotel.

The breakfast team, and Lidia especially were outstanding. The hotel location is superb and potential is fantastic, but the rooms are very dated and in need of money spending to upgrade there quality.

No sleep Saturday night!

There was a Disco till midnight on the Saturday of our stay - it shook the room! No sleep till it was finished. Also, there was no heating in the room (Radiator not working - don't they check these things as part of maintenance?), eventually provided with an electric heater - not much use really and, frankly, based on their poor upkeep of heating I was not prepared to leave it on unattended, which meant returning to a cold room. I reported all this to the Hotel but received have no response, very poor customer service.

Always stay here when in Exeter

Would normally give 5 stars as we always get great treatment from the staff. The only reason we gave 4 is we would have liked our breakfast brought to our room as I am disabled and my husband has nerve damage which makes carrying trays difficult but we do understand that there is a staff shortage.

The Rougemont was clean and comfortable. However, breakfast wasn’t great ….. coffee was mediocre and croissants were cold and doughy. Scrambled egg needed to be refreshed more regularly. Reception staff could have been more proactive and cheerful

When we first Checked in on March 27, and was given Privileged Room, we found that the room cleanliness is not up to the standard, there was a broken door cabinet, a missing rob hook in the bathroom. We complained and asked for the repairs, and they promised to repair the next day, which was not completely. And the second day on March 28, we told the Front Office, that we are leaving and they can repair and clean the room, apparently when we came back at 17.00, our room was untouched at all, and the Housekeeper was saying she had a shortage of staff. Based on the two days incident, we checked out on March 29 and decided to move to other hotel, the Du Vin in Exeter. I am strongly recommend that for the sake of the name as Mercure Accor Group, The Management of Accor need to take a look throroughly at this property.

A wonderful old building in the centre of town, which badly needs a sensitive restoration. Staff do their best, but the suite was dusty and promised slippers were absent and very few toiletries for two people. The most serious complaint concerned the room service. which they said they were too busy to provide room service and we would have to collect the food, which rather destroys the point of resting in your room!

Noisy room (thin walls or noisy guests, can’t be sure), uncomfortable bed but worse still was walking to breakfast to find a corridor on the way to the lift littered with dog poo. Completely ruined breakfast since the sight and smell was awful.

Stayed for two nights, comfortable room with a good hot shower. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is ideally located opposite the central railway station. A nice bar and restaurant, although we didn’t eat there the menus was reasonable and the food we saw others eating looked good.

Location was amazing. Room decoration a bit tired. Bathroom ceiling with green mould. Breakfast was the worse I ever have in a Mercure. Cheap bread, dry croissant, dry chocolate muffin. Only bacon and sausage was fine. Staff: amazing, super friendly and kind. Lovely place to stay.

Great Breakfast. Helpful Listening Friendly Staff. Travelling with my disabled wife, the Hotel went out of their way to welcome us and make life easy. Sadly the room wasn't quite ready, but quickly rectified. My evening meal of Fish and Chips and Mushy peas was excellent. Sadly my wife's Gammon was not. Around 1am the Fire Alarm tripped and we went to our assembly point. Fire Brigade sorted it, soon back to bed. Brilliant Breakfast! Caring Staff were on hand to assist our departure. We shall go again. No real issues. Top marks for Care & Service..

In need of some upgrades and a better breakfast. Check in online good. The hotel is in the centre of Exeter across from the Central railway station. Close to shops and restaurants. The hotel needs an upgrade to bring it back to its former standard. Breakfast was ok. All buffet but some of the items on didplay were in need of changing. Watermelon past it’s best. Replaced when asked but looked like the same plate to me. Baked beans looked congealed.

Overnight stay at The Rougemont

patrick_haughton TripAdvisor review

We have stayed at the Exeter, Rougemont Hotel several times now, and as always, enjoyed our stay. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable; the staff unfailingly helpful and polite - and the ambiance of the hotel itself quite special. The location for exploring the city is hard to beat!

Not what i was expecting from an Accor Hotel

I am very accustomed to staying at Accor properties all around Europe, but was very disappointed with my stay. Nothing wrong with the room of the cleanliness of the hotel, although it could do with a bit of refresh. it was the food! the menu was not inviting (burgers, burgers and more burgers - i am not staying at McDonald) the evening meal was very poor, the veg were over steamed, the mashed potatoes had a bad aftertaste and the Steak and Ale pie must have been re-heated several time before being served. The breakfast was advertised for 07:30, but due to staff issue could not be served until 08:00. not what i am used to for that money.

It’s a shame the more expensive rooms overlook the bins. Unfortunately the glass bin was emptied at 5am! It would have been good if you had a child menu. It was all fine but nothing more. Live and learn.

Gabbiadini TripAdvisor review

The hotel is ideally located if you are arriving from Exeter Central railway station. We had booked a privilege room for a short break, and received a friendly, helpful welcome at reception. With regard to the room, whilst it was a good size and comfortable, the storage space was badly lacking, particularly drawer space. Instead of bedside cabinets, where you would normally have 2 or 3 drawers, the room had small table each side of the bed. The small amount of storage space, other than the hanging rail, was a shelf in the bottom of the built-in wardrobe. Also, being a privilege room, a Nespresso coffee machine was provided. However, disappointingly there were no expresso size cups to use with it to ensure the correct measure - the large mugs that were supplied would not fit the coffee machine! We opted to have breakfast at the hotel. Both cooked and continental breakfast options were available buffet style. Guests could select whichever items they liked. Some of the cooked items looked rather dried up - e.g. the baked beans and scrambled eggs. We didn't ever see anyone from the kitchen staff checking these items, but the front of house member of staff did get replacement trays as quantities got low. There was a good selection but no marmalade was available. We did eat in Drakes Bar within the hotel one evening, which was fine. The hotel is in a great location from which to explore Exeter city centre and quay area on foot. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and other facilities close by. It is certainly worth considering for a visit, and with a few simple changes, particularly within the rooms, could be made much better.

Tired Hotel

The Hotel is clean and the staff helpful. The building and facilities are in need of renovation. Carpets are threadbare furniture aging and there are several minor maintenance issues. We had three rooms which did not represent value, small and the noisy kitchen extract directly outside the rooms stopped at after midnight and started at 6.30am, okay if you are late to bed and an early riser. If we had been paying €80 rather than €250 a night, all this would have been tolerable. We reported the issues, including damage to the walls and door of one rooms and got a 10% discount which was minimal.

Used to be a lovely hotel but a bit sad now

Edpurser TripAdvisor review

Rougemont was a lovely hotel but all a bit sad now. Carpet on main stair case frayed. Bed was a great size but mattress tired and with covid (no fault of there own) no daily cleaning. Breakfast was nice and great service there. Difficult to get into the car park and now they charge £12 daily/nightly charge and a cheaper rate found round the corner in nearby car park. Overall Exeter is a beautiful city with green fields in view wherever you look and the Rougemont would be perfect if desperately needed monies spent on the property. Front of house and desk staff were very helpful, friendly, approachable and welcoming.
