We booked this hotel through our travel agent, adding a few extra days in Sydney after an amazing Viking Cruise from Auckland to Sydney. The location on Darling Harbour is wonderful, and the property itself is lovely. We arrived early in the morning, and the staff were very accommodating in handling our bags since the room would not be ready until around 2 pm. The room was also very nice, clean, and comfortable. The challenges stemmed from the hotel's overwhelming number of people. To be fair, it was the end of summer holidays and Australia Day weekend, so the whole city was awash in tourists. But we've seen fewer kids and families at Disney Resorts than we experienced here. It was minor chaos. The queue for the elevator could take several minutes, the pool was packed to the walls, and the line to enter the breakfast area took 15 minutes just to get seated. The food was fine, but not exceptional. Service was also a bit slow, and when my wife asked a member of the wait staff for a paper napkin, she was directed to the tea and coffee station to find one. Bad enough the staff person couldn't move the 20 feet to the cart herself, but worse, the coffee and tea area was a mess with no napkins to be found. It's a little thing, but very atypical for a luxury hotel. Certainly not a disaster, but not what you'd expect at such a significant price point.

The good: Nice rooms. Good location. The bad: Room hot as hell on arrival and took hours to cool down. Youthful, inexperienced bartender says she can't make a chocolate martini even though I'm standing at the bar looking at all ingredients for a chocolate martini. Booked a harbor view, got a view of 2 rooftops of solar panels and an excellent view of the business district but no view of any water. As an experienced business traveler I typically roll with the ups and downs of travel. However, came to Sydney from Queenstown, NZ, where I stayed at the Sofitel and had a similar extremely sub-par experience.

The hotel was very clean. Thumbs up for the house keeping staff. The beds are spacious and comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was 7/10.

I was extremely satisfied with my visit. The team had somehow acted on the feedback given last time. I had another milk placed in my fridge, even though the other was open and not empty, this was appreciated, as I did not have to ring to get another delivered late at night as I usually do. I was also appreciative of the concierge giving me a drink voucher when I explained my app was not working and could not open to access my free drink. And Nicks restaurants mentioned that if staying at Sofitel, I could ask for drink voucher for their restaurants, which I did, so I went an enjoyed dinner there as usual, but received a free drink, I even took a work colleague along. Thank you for the great service

The treatment I received from the evening staff (Lucy) was completely unacceptable. I called reception from my room 1921 to say - I ordered medical supplies via delivery because I was very sick with food poising. Please send them to my room ASAP. Instead of replying professionally or with empathy, the person said something irrelevant: "hotel policy does not bring food up to the room." There are many issues with how I was treated. 1. I clearly stated it was medical supplies (heat packs, blanket, no food) 2. I clearly stated I was very ill and received a completely unprofessional response. Lucy should have said "I'm sorry to hear, do you need assistance, medical care, how can we assist?" 3. By not delivering supplies and suggesting I should go to lobby, I would have vomited in the hallway, elevator, and/or lobby. Between the two calls I had to make for my supplies (which were eventually delivered to my room 15 minutes after my second call) I vomited twice in my own bathroom 4. Sofitel has a legal responsibility to ensure their guests are not prevented by staff from receiving medical supplies. Imagine I my condition deteriorated and I needed serious medical attention 5. I asked for her manager and she refused to give me their name or contact details I am extremely disappointed with this treatment and would never recommend Sofitel to friends / family. Sofitel is a 5 star hotel and no guest should have the bad experience that I endured.
