Like many hotels, this Mercure has seen better days, but it is beautiful and desperately needs some love and investment from it’s owners. We received a nice welcome and our room was more than adequate; fairly clean, comfy bed, tea coffee. It would benefit from some deep cleaning: skirting boards, bottom of taps. The room was very hot and staff were very helpful with fans and glasses of water. All good so far. However, this is a fairly substantial hotel which offers numerous different menus on its website and indicates room service on the telephone. But at 2pm I went to order some food and was told the info was wrong on the website and food did not start until 5.30pm. This I could understand in a small or independent hotel but a little bit remiss from one one the Accor chain. I was offered support with takeaways and cutlery. All very polite. I returned in the evening to ask again if I could order food, but I missed the window and had to order a takeaway. Breakfast is a buffet, not all items listed were available (I probably got up too late for the pain side chocolate which perhaps got devoured quite quickly). The hot buffet not very inviting so I requested a couple of poached eggs, only to be told, “the chef is not doing eggs today” So another good disappointment - I do think chain hotels should be able to provide a guest with something as basic as a poached egg. So in short it was a wee bit disappointing, but some lovely helpful staff and a very convenient location Yes I will return, no doubt but hope they can sort out he food situation soon or there will be a lot of hungry guests.

We have had the worst customer service from this hotel. They refuse to return what they owe us making all sorts of fake excuses. Surprising for such a large chain to sink so low to keep a little change. They must be doing quite badly. On top of that they've provided bad service, broken equipment and so much more. Even gave our expensive room to someone else previously. I would steer away from them.

On arrival and check in 2 rooms weren’t ready when we entered the bedrooms. One had not been cleaned at all and the other had no bedding or towels. The double room was fine. Once back at reception they apologised and said the they were experiencing problems with the communication system. Also there had been a problem with the laundry. We were given vouchers for free drinks whilst we waited. The staff were really pleasant and worked really hard. Unfortunately I think there just weren’t enough of them.

As you arrive, the hotel looks rather grand. Lovely old building, rather nice grounds, lovely entrance foyer. Then we got to our room. We booked a double, for 2 of us, so expected it to be suitable for 2 people! The bed was only a 4 foot so not full size double bed. It was pushed up to a wall so you could only get in on one side. The room wasn't big enough to have it any other way. The room was in a really shabby state. Everything has been painted around so the mirrors and wall pictures have paint on. Even the light switches were covered in paint. The book carpets were filthy and in dire need of a good clean and vacuum. There was merged wax on it! The top of the wardrobe was covered in a thick layer of dust, as was the top of the pictures and mirrors. The long mirror had a word looking filthy mark on it. The bathroom had paint on the floor. The toilet head toilet paper in it and it's clearly never seen a squirt of Toilet Duck and a brush! The plugs aren't attached to the sink or bath, and they were grimy. The sink wasn't clean. Room 110 needs to be single occupancy. Oh, and housekeeping were knocking us awake at just after 9am!!! We were only there 1 night, why on earth would they not just wait until we'd checked out? We overlooked the back yard, bins overflowing, dirty laundry and goodness knows what else all pulled up, then watched a chef/cook moving the wheely bins while on his chef's whites! Yuk! Avoid. I would not stay here again. The whole place just looked in desperate need of renovating and cleaning up! Picture is the "view" from our room.
