Good Weekend Away

TripAdvisor rating 4.0/5

GK4201 TripAdvisor review

We booked with Secret Escapes. On arrival the receptionist was awful! We walked in, she was on her computer which was fine, but a glance, a smile or an 'I'll be with you in a moment' would have gone a long way. We were waiting a few minutes before she even acknowledged us! Not a great start and hence the 4 stars not 5. We got to our room which was on the ground floor with an adjoining door to the next room. I have watched far too many horror films to stay in a room with an adjoining door so tried to ring reception but the room phone didn't work. I wasn't looking forward to having to speak to the woman on reception again, she was cold and unwelcoming but really had no choice. Got to reception and there was the loveliest most friendly lady with the grumpy one, she was amazing and couldn't do enough to help. She changed our room and gave me hope that our weekend wouldn't be a nightmare. From then on our weekend was perfect. The staff in the restaurant especially Teresa (I think that was her name - she was serving on Saturday 3rd evening) and Laura at breakfast were lovely. The food was good. Don't be expecting fine dining, think more gastro pub food, all the meals we had were nice. There is a bar area with TV and lots of comfy seats, a really nice area to chill and watch the football. Our room was clean, if a little tired. Bed was comfy, bathroom was quite small but clean and more than adequate. Loved the toiletries they supplied. Great shower which was over a bath. Good size TV. Overall we were very pleased. Every other member of staff we encountered was friendly and helpful. We had to register our car for the car park and were expecting a £20 bill for parking (£10 per night) but the hotel covered it which was a really nice touch. TIP: If you're staying in the rooms right at the back, it is much quicker and easier to go out of the back door by the restaurant across the garden and up the steps than all the way round inside the hotel. We would definitely visit again.

Staff do their upmost to ensure your stay goes well, but no heating in the hotel and no hot water on two occasions blights your stay. The hotel in in need of major improvements and updates, great location by past its best.

As a business traveller x 200 hotel nights a year , Accor member I was disturbed by the way this place is ran I asked for a ground floor room and was put in a garden room i had 2 large bags and was ill advised as to where to go it took me 15 minutes to find the room it was tired so was I id arrived early to take 2 teams calls on schedule the wifi was good but after a long day at around 5 pm i wanted something to eat i was rudely told we dont serve til 6 so i went to tescos to get some food as i hadnt eaten my room was cold i asked for a heater but never heard another thing. It was the night England played Wales in the world cup there wasn't even a tv in the bar the drinks were extremely expensive i could go on but the place is a joke i asked for a printed invoice in the morning as i was working away all week and sometimes send my expenses in midweek they said no we don't print them we e mail them and whilst i understand that surely it can be either or but no chance here not even for a loyal member ill never ever stay here again. And i dont leave bad reviews often it was just an utterly bad experience.Breakfast was ok ish.All the ash trays out the back were full and had been for weeks by the looks of them.

First double room in a side wing was cold and the corridor carpet soaking wet. Managed to be relocated to warmer room but only twin. Dinner food very good - steak, duck, fish. Breakfast poor - no table service (even for tea/coffee). Luke warm buffet breakfast (bacon, sausage etc.)
