Recent reviews have all pointed out that the hotel is understaffed but I can clearly see that the staff have all been trying to do the best that they can to ensure we have a pleasant stay. We went there for an overnight trip to hike around the Box Hill area and had dinner at the restaurant too. Food was delicious and everyone’s been really lovely. Would definitely come back again

Booked a 3 night stay, somewhere different for us as we were not familiar with area. Not disappointed - impressive views from Boxhill and great walks along the scenic River Mole. Allowed to check in early - couple of minor issues with room which were immediately sorted. All staff polite and helpful. Exceptional service from Diane (General Manager, I believe), a credit to Mercure and great role model for other staff. Perfect location for a relaxing break - so much so , we have booked another short stay in February.

I stayed for 2 nights on business and I was extremely impressed with the standard of service I received. Every member of staff I came in to contact with was professional, friendly and courteous. Special thanks goes to the night receptionist, who assisted me with an issue late in the evening. The hotel itself is a bit tired looking in places, but overall very pleasant. I would return again if in the area

We stayed for a couple of nights. The hotel was close to friends who we were visiting. Its right next to Box Hill so great for a walk and a view. The downstairs has been well refurbished and is smart. Our bedroom (305) was a not as nice as it might have been. It was a standard double. It was at the back of the hotel so quiet. The layout was poor and it had the feel of a Travel Lodge - not quite enough furniture. The TV was in an odd place on the wall. My advice is to get anothert bedside cabinet and move the sideboard opposite the bed. The overhead light fitting was full of dead flies. We had two teabags which meant that after a cup of tea when we arrived we had to ask for some for the morning. The cups were not washed when the room was serviced. The shower had been leaking for a while. The room was boiling hot and we couldnt turn it down. However, the response of the staff to some of these issues was great. Very helpful and sorted what they could. The boiler broke and they had a hotel full of wedding guests so they must have been very stressed. Breakfast was very good. We didnt like the look of the scrambled eggs so the chef cooked us fried eggs. Breakfast was very busy but they kept tidying the buffet and replacing and refreshing the food. The staff in the breakfast room were fantastic. Overall it was a good stay. The pool looks nice and I imagine fun in the summer.

A pleasant experience

I stayed or one night with a small family group attending a funeral nearby. Other friends and relatives joined us for dinner and drinks afterwards. There were not many other guests in the hotel, so the staff were very attentive. The building is quite old and, although refurbished and extended, shows its age occasionally. Nevertheless, my bedroom and all public rooms were comfortable. The hotel is located near to a fairly busy road and l was conscious of the traffic noise, although it was not unduly intrusive. The surrounding landscape, some owned by the National Trust, is beautiful, although sadly we didn't have time to explore it. The principal thing I will remember about my stay is your friendly and helpful staff, who contributed much to my enjoyment of my stay. I would definitely consider coming here again if I am in the area.

Very good evening meal and now well priced and staff excellent, but no bar service for food after 5 pm is not helpful. Room is very tired and needs investment, over the 10/12 years I have stayed here there has been no bedroom improvements. Showers and bathroom changes are good, but even now the heated towel rails do not work.

Disturbed evening

We had to change room as there was no hot water in the shower, in addition there was a wedding and the music was playing loudly to 11.30pm so couldn't get to sleep until after then. The hotel seemed short staffed presumably because they were attending the wedding. The room we stayed in had sliding doors on to a balcony so was difficult to control ventilation as we did not want to leave the door open over night for security reasons. I am a frequent user of the Accor chain and this is the first time I have had problems of this nature. The hotel did provide us with a free breakfast, but just felt disappointed by the experience.

Need More Staff

We were lucky and checked in around 3pm but the reception area was full of people waiting for over 2 hours for their room to be ready. According to one guest there may have been 2 wedding bookings on the same day, this is unacceptable if correct. The service was slow due to lack of staff. Saturday breakfast was terrible, grey bacon, rock hard scrambled eggs, tasteless burnt sausages, dried out mushrooms,no bananas with fruit basket and more. However we must compliment Jonathan who did the work of at least 3 people he was amazing!

Beautiful old building but a little run down

It was a bit like staying at Butlins with the buildings out the back. They were quite spacious which was fab, but the smell of damp was really bad. The room itself wasn’t very clean. We had pink stains on the carpet and the bathroom was quite dirty in the corners. We had to teach the bar lady how to make an Aperol Spritz, and the staff were a tad slow. We attended a wedding, the Food was delicious

Friendly and helpful staff welcomed us to a very comfortable hotel. We had no worries about Covid as precautions were in place and it gave us the opportunity to meet up with close family over a very nice evening meal. We would happily stay again.

After booking this venue for our wedding 2 years ago, and rooms for the night prior to the wedding to get ready in, we have had nothing but trouble getting through to the booking team. We paid a lot of money to stay in tiny rooms with peeling wallpaper and broken lampshades. The bathroom was missing the bath plug, the rooms were cramped and we were told that you could sleep 2 adults and 2 children, this was not the case. When we checked this with reception, we got told that it will be fine. Bridal suite was average with damp in the corner and what looked like a bugs nest in the other corner. Aside from the rooms and lack of staff communication, we did enjoy our stay, the bar area was lovely and cosy, the weddings team were delightful and super helpful! With the wedding area of the hotel just perfect! The grounds of the hotel were lovely and the food was exceptional!

Room was lovely. Breakfast was busy so there was lots of waiting- to be seated, and then for food to be replenished. But the staff were pleasant and doing their best.

Good location

Room was small but, as we were only staying for 1 night, this was not a problem. The room had everything we needed and the bed was very comfy. The only minor irritation was the creaky floor boards. The bathroom was modern but, again, small (some might consider being able to wash while sitting on the loo a bonus). As with previous comments, there were areas in need of redecoration and new carpets. We enjoyed a lovely evening meal in the restaurant.

A nice little break

I read the reviews before booking and I must say I was surprised with the recent negative comments but decided to go anyway as I wanted a nice outdoor pool near London. My stay was so pleasant and I have nothing but good things to say - from the receptionist who greated us upon arrival and kindly informed that hotel does not operate dinner restaurant, however suggested local pubs instead. Ground floor rooms now also allow pets! So we actually had a little puppy with us, which was so nice - the breakfast buffet was generous and they sat us in the outside area (I asked) in the nice weather so that we can also have the dog with us while eating; the pool to enjoy was amazing too. Area itself is really nice, you can do plenty of walks in Box Hill. I would definitely stay at this hotel again, especially during the next heat wave!

This was my second visit to the Hotel and, once again, a very positive one. The reception staff are friendly and efficient and Jack does an excllent job on the bar and taking food orders. The room was adequate for what we wanted. Breakfast very good - I asked for fired eggs rather than the scarmbled which they did for me. Although we didn't get a chance to use it, this hotel has a fantastic heated, outdoor pool.
