Disappointing start but turned it around

The St Pauls is genuinely one of our favourite places to stay, location, staff, spa, rooms and views of the peace gardens so we chose to return as a base for s music event we were attending in Rotherham. Unfortunately the first two rooms we were allocated not only looked tired but neither had a working a/c unit, one of them actually broken and covered over with a piece of wood or card. I think it was Scott on reception then moved us to a club room (I am an accord member) with working a/c , quality fixtures and finish and great views. So by the third room we enjoyed the experience we had come to expect and from there everything was great.

We used the Arundel Gate car park where the hotel offers a discount. It is only a five minute walk from the hotel. The position is very central to the city centre and is located in a pleasant pedestrianised area. The room was a good size, but the television was far too small for the room. All the staff were very friendly and professional. The most annoying aspect of the hotel is charging guests £10 for each use of the swimming pool. Needless to say, I didn’t use it.

The room safe was broken and could not be fixed.We were told they were “on order “. The sealing strip at the bottom edge of the shower was missing allowing water to flood the bathroom.Again we were told they were “on order “ Reception staff were very helpful but seemed to be working at a disadvantage. On checking out we were told we could not have a printout of our account as the printer was down.An email receipt was promised but never arrived. All in all a much poorer experience than on our several previous visits.

The good bits: - the staff were all very friendly which includes barman, breakfast staff, reception and housekeeping, encountered them all and they were all very accommodating. - breakfast had a good selection, no mushrooms but the rest made up for it. It's a very pleasant area to sit in. - good welcome at reception, informed of swimming charge and later tried to help adjust the air con by coming up to the room personally. - room was ok, a bit jaded but happy overall The bad bit: - the 2nd pillow on the bed had a long hair in the shape of a heart on it and there were odd black spots on the sheet. Housekeeping were very quick to respond though and immediately changed it. Later I found a tissue under the phone with blood or red nail varnish on it, couldn't really tell but it felt disconcerting. I didn't sleep that well as a result wondering if the room had been cleaned well or the bed had bed bugs with the random spots. I didn't have any bites though so it can't have. So it would have been 3 stars but the friendliness of the staff made it 4 stars. I would return again but make sure that I do a good check of the room, I always do anyway and pull the sheets back as soon as I go in any hotel which is why I noticed the issues straight away. I've had the same problem with Novotel and Jurys Inn before so it's not that uncommon to be fair.

I've stayed at this hotel a fair few times, and the value has decreased. While the nightly rate can still be reasonable, first breakfast changed from included to extra. On my last trip it they told me the spa was no longer included. So now, there's no real benefit over other budget hotels.
