Clean and comfortable

The ibis at Stratford is a clean and comfortable hotel. It is well situated on the high street of Stratford and near the Olympic park. The rooms are well appointed and roomy for a budget hotel. Well worth a visit.

Basic but central location

Very basic hotel located on a busy main road. Can’t open the window in room 118 and air con only blew hot so there was no ventilation at all in the room. The hotel is rather tired and the housekeeping do their best to wake you up and encourage you to leave well before check out. Breakfast was appalling, very limited choice and they had completely run out of pastries. The location is good, fairly close to Stratford station, shops and the Olympic park. Ok for the price as London hotels are expensive but next time I’d pay a bit more and stay somewhere more comfortable.

This is a repeat visit having stayed circa 6 months previously. The synopsis of the review is that things are a little unpolished and there are small things that could make a real difference. The room was perfectly clean and nothing can be faulted. I previously left a negative review about the breakfast buffet missing items and then having a long wait. The situation has improved but still isn’t great. Things like hash browns, for example, they could just improve on by cooking more. I didn’t see any vegetarian cooked items (like Quorn sausages) but they should have a sign up saying that they could be provided on request. There were no menus put out either, as some multi-chain hotels do in the UK for breakfast buffets. I found that the reception staff weren’t great. They could have been more warm, welcoming and enthusiastic. There was one male member of staff who kept refilling my empty pint glass when I took it back to the bar (as I do as a courtesy) without even asking me if it was ok (it was ok but I like to be asked if they do not automatically provide me with a new one). I also didn’t get a ‘thank you’ from him during all of my transactions that he undertook with me, even though I always say ‘thank you’. However, there was a female receptionist who automatically provided a new glass and said ‘thank you’. There is complimentary water provided by the reception but there are just ridiculous paper funnel paper cups provided (it must take 20 of those to fill a pint glass). They should put glasses on a tray as well, so customers can choose. When I asked for a glass I got provided with the smallest one, almost as him saying that if you want a big glass of water you have to pay for it (despite paying for drinks at the bar and paying a last minute surge price of circa £380 for 2 nights). I ordered some food via WhatsApp and it took them exactly 15 minutes to acknowledge it (2 mins after I got frustrated and text them to request acknowledgement), despite the fact that I could see that they had read the message just after it was sent. In isolation, all of these things are inconsequential but in combination it didn’t make me feel valued as a customer. I would have been more sympathetic but they weren’t exactly busy in the reception / bar. I don’t expect a 5 star service but it is frustrating that most of this could be avoidable by better training and better motivating the staff. The hotel needs to go back to having a culture where customers feel valued by displaying some very basic consideration (something that seems to have disappeared post-COVID), as it becomes a dominoes effect when customers feel a succession of small and avoidable things add up to a feel of being treated with a little contempt.

Complimentary dirty sock on arrival

Arrived at this hotel to stay a week for business. On entering my room, I tried to get into the bathroom but it appeared to be locked. I thought "oh no, they've allocated a room that's already occupied". As I thought someone was in there I shouted "hello". No answer, so then I panicked and thought"what if someone's died on the toilet". I pulled the door as hard as I could thinking I was going to break it, but it popped open and to my relief the bathroom was compleyely empty. It seems you have to literally break in everytime you need it. Having worked out the bathroom situation I went to put my clothes away in the "wardrobe". This is when I found, what I assume was, a complimentary dirty sock. It wasn't my style and I have two feet so I decided to remove it from my room. Since the corridor was littered with dirty sheets, I added the sock to the pile. Exhausted after travelling and accessing the bathroom it was time for bed. The air-conditioning had be switched off centrally but as it was a mild evening I needed the window open. It was dark on arrival so I hadn't realised my room backed onto Morrison's delivery and bin area. I was awoken at 3am by "beep beep, this vehicle is reversing". This happened another 4 times in the space of 1o mins (clearly the driver had issues with parking). Further noise of bins being emptied didn't help me to drift off again. As I couldn't sleep I thought I'd get up early and iron my shirt. Couldn't find an iron and ironing board anywhere in the room. Turns out you have to go to the "ironing room. This is depressing room with a ligtbilb dimmer than a candle. The iron heats up to more than warm and is as good as ironing your shirt your hand!! After shirt ironing, I was looking forward to a cooked breakfast. I'd hoped it would be hot. Not even warm. An unfortunate experience and hopefully not representative of this hotel chain.
