Moorea - Over the water bungalow - 20th Anniversary

TripAdvisor rating 5.0/5

RabbitSam TripAdvisor review

So after a great night on Tahiti, we caught the water ferry over to Moorea. While we were standing in the taxi line, we notice a large tour bus loading people and bags. After the first 10 taxi's left, there was not another taxi around (I'm sure there were more coming), but we were able to jump onto this large bus for $2000 XFP and the luckily the first stop was the Sofitel. Very friendly staff. Our over the water bungalow was FANTASTIC! This was our 20th anniversary trip, and there was a bottle of champagne and a small cake pastry for us with a welcoming note. Nice touch! This is the place to slip right into the water for amazing snorkeling. There was a lot of coral and fish. We did two shared excursions including a sunset sail on Taboo, and an island tour in an open air truck. I recommend both. The sunset tour was nice, our booking included transportation and a taxi picked us promptly. We took a small john boat out to Taboo, which has just came in from a snorkeling trip and swapped out the crew. This was not a 100% sail, as we motored some and sailed some. Drinks were provided. The island tour also met us promptly. We did the pineapple farm, agriculture farm, mountain, juice/rum distillery tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and spoke great English. The food in the restaurants was very good. The menu doesn't change much and is limited, so explore options somewhat and make a plan. Our breakfast buffet was included, so we filled up here and generally split a pizza for lunch, then had a nice dinner. We did not go off property for dinner. Travel tips - our bungalow was way out, but worth it for the extra view and deeper water. I took a kayak out from the dive shop and it was nice to get on the water. Comparisons with Intercontinental Tahiti and Bora Bora Westin - not really fair to do. Tahiti was just an overnight for us and Bora Bora has a different vibe. Cars/taxis can get to the Sofitel directly, whereas Westin Bora Bora access is by boat. Sofitel Moorea is an older property than Westin Bora Bora, but that didn't bother us. I would go here again - Absolutely!

A wonderful stay at the Sofitel Moorea

My husband and I just got back from a 2 week trip to French Polynesia and Moorea was our first stop. The Sofitel is conveniently about a 7 min drive from the ferry and 7 min drive to the airport. It is a 10-15 min drive to the northern area where there are a number of hotels and restaurants as well. We stayed in a deluxe overwater bungalow which has two loungers on a deck to enjoy when you get done snorkeling. We stayed here over the Hilton specifically because I read that the snorkeling was protected and better. I will say that the snorkeling from the bungalow was outstanding. We spent hours enjoying all of the coral and sea life right there. I was concerned about the gym situation as it didn't used to have one until recently and the reviews weren't great. I sometimes pick a hotel over another based on the gym facilities so this was important to me (but didn't override wanting the best owb snorkeling experience). I'm happy to report that although the gym is small, it is new, clean and well maintained with new Technogym trendmills, ellipticals, universal gym, and free weights. It also had yoga mats, an incline bench and some medicine balls. It was stocked with towels and water. The air conditioning died on the first day I was there which made it uncomfortable to work out, but by the next day it was working again and wonderful. The main restaurant has a decent breakfast buffet that gets repetitive but was still enjoyable (for the 5 days we ate there). It had a chef who'd make eggs your way and pancakes/crepes as well. Also, on Sunday they have a more elaborate brunch buffet with grilled fish and sashimi options. Here I want to give a shout out to Heintz who was the chef 3/5 days and he was outstanding. His positive energy, smile, eagerness to make you what you wanted as well as he could, and just plain friendliness was something to look forward to in the morning. We went to the polynesian night which was overpriced. The food was decent but nothing special. The dancers/musicians were fun to watch/listen to for an evening. They have a bar next to the main restaurant that has a happy hour with a number of decent cocktails at a lower price. Overall we throughly enjoyed our time here. I just heard that they are planning a rennovation next year. Hopefully they update the bungalows and make them more modern/less tired. They were still nice and enjoyable but a refresh would make this the undeniable resort to choose on Moorea. Also, although we didn't use the pool, if a nice pool scene is your thing, this is definitely not where you should come. It is pretty sad....but why would you go to this resort to spend time at a pool when the beautiful beach and amazing snorkeling is a few feet away? Hopefully though, they will redo the pool area and make it worth while. The only reason why I wouldn't stay here is if you didn't want to drive or get a taxi to go out to dinners off of the property. I know the other two main resorts are more in the northern "hotel zone" area and it would be easy to just walk from these to a bunch of restaurants without having to drive/pay for a taxi. If you don't mind driving 15 min to go to dinner, then I'd definitely recommend staying here. It was a stay to remember.

Spent three nights in a luxury garden bungalow quite close to the beach, Our room was large and comfortable with a huge bed and decent storage space. We enjoyed relaxing on the terrace and it was a brief stroll to the beach for a couple of snorkelling trips.
