Restaurants and Street Food on the Famous Charoenkrung Road

Looking for Bangkok street food, as well as Bangkok restaurants? Charoenkrung, one of Bangkok’s oldest neighbourhoods, has it all.

Some of the hottest restaurants in Bangkok are in Charoenkrung — one of the city’s oldest tourist attractions. The road is fast becoming known as a true foodie destination in Thailand and beyond. Recent additions to the neighbourhood have started to attract a whole new segment of people who are interested in exploring new takes on traditional Thai and fusion cuisine.

Here’s a short guide on where to eat in Charoenkrung, home to Bangkok street food and some of its top restaurants.

80/20

Originally a humble hostel eatery, 80/20 is now one of the hottest dining locations on Charoenkrung Road thanks to its innovative take on Thai cuisine.

The play on the well-known 80/20 rule is used not only in name — 80 percent of the restaurant’s ingredients are locally and sustainably sourced from nearby Talat Noi market. The local produce shines in the hands of star head chef Napol Jantraget, who puts together an exciting fusion menu with authentic Thai roots.

Gastronomically and aesthetically spectacular dishes, combined with a cosy atmosphere and delicious home-made cocktails, make 80/20 a restaurant that some have called the finest dining experience in Bangkok.

Le Normandie

No Bangkok food guide is complete without a touch of French cuisine and on Charoenkrung Road, book a table at Le Normandie for a taste of premium Parisian prowess.

Admire the glistening Chao Phraya River through floor-to-ceiling windows as you enjoy opulent French classics like foie gras and milk-fed veal accompanied with a full-bodied glass of Burgundy wine.

At Le Normandie, you can expect a truly high-end restaurant experience with first-class service, excellent food and an alluring atmosphere. While not the most traditional Thai restaurant, this fine experience makes it a truly worthwhile visit in Bangkok.

Supanniga Cruise

After taking in the buzz of the Charoenkrung inner neighbourhood, head to the pier to enjoy the glow of a warm Bangkok sunset as you sail down Chao Phraya River on a luxurious 40-seat dinner cruise.

A must-do on your list of where to eat in Bangkok, Supanniga Cruise is a remarkable experience offering evening cocktail and champagne cruises with a grand view of the Chao Phraya riverbank.

If you take the 6.15pm Sunset Cruise leaving from the River City Pier, you can enjoy a glass of champagne and a six-course meal by the Supanniga Eating Room. The cruise restaurant has forged a reputation for serving up some impressive and authentic Bangkok eats like tom yum goong (shrimp tom yum soup), mango sticky rice and tender, stir-fried meat platters.

Volcanic Fried Mussels and Oysters (Tip Hoy Tod Phu-khao Fai)

We cannot emphasise this enough: Bangkok street food is not to be missed.

Formerly a small street cart, this family joint fries up some of the best oyster and mussel omelettes in town. With a harmony of crispy and chewy textures, this iconic Bangkok street food delicacy is full of savoury satisfaction. Pair with the sweet and sour chili sauce on the side to really enhance the flavours of this must-try dish.

Prachak Pet Yang (Roasted Duck)

Take our advice and don’t stop at one Bangkok street food stall. With so many places to eat in Bangkok, take your time to wander and savour the enormous variety of local cuisine.

Prachak Roasted Duck has been in business for four generations. Yet, they remain a local favourite and it is easy to see why. Their roast duck, served with rice or thin noodles is tender, accompanied by crisp, melt-in-the-mouth caramelised duck skin. The dish is drenched in a sauce that is sweet and salty, balanced to perfection.

If you have room for dessert, hunt down sweet shop Sor Boonprakob Panich, which has been serving authentic Thai sweets for more than 80 years. Their authentic and fragrant Thai desserts such as kaotom pad (banana and sticky rice) and succulent rice puddings are the perfect cherry on top of your Bangkok gastronomic adventures.
