Glasgow Christmas markets: the lowdown

Glasgow’s Christmas market season begins with the official Lights Switch-On at George Square in mid-November, signalling the start of Winterfest. The festive fun can be found at two city centre markets: the larger one on George Square and a smaller set-up at St. Enoch Square. Luckily, the two markets are only a 10-minute walk apart, making it easy to explore them both. The best part? Entry to both venues is absolutely free, ensuring that everyone can come along and enjoy the atmosphere. Here are some recommendations for making the most of your visit.

Top tip:
Visit on a weekday to avoid the larger weekend crowds. Daytime hours are quieter but there's something undeniably enchanting about the Christmas markets at night.

1. Take a thrilling festive ride

Set against the backdrop of the ornate City Chambers building, George Square hosts the second-biggest Christmas market in Scotland. For a bird's eye view of the action, take a ride on the 40-metre Ferris wheel, whose Venetian chairs offer a stunning city panorama. You'll find a whole host of other rides too, like the traditional Victorian carousel, vintage helter skelter and dizzying flying chairs. Meanwhile, over at St. Enoch Square, thrill-seekers can fly through the air at 110 km per hour on The Blizzard, which lifts riders up 180 degrees before spinning them upside down. Closer to the ground, you can test your grip against the cold on a 6-metre ice climbing wall. Little ones might prefer a ride on Santa's runaway train or turning somersaults on the bungee trampolines.

2. Get your skates on

Nothing captures the seasonal spirit quite like strapping on some ice skates and gliding seamlessly across the ice, feeling like you're in a Christmas movie. Okay, so the reality might not be quite that graceful, but whether you're a seasoned pro or a cling-to-the-edge beginner, ice skating is a great fun activity for families, friends and couples. It's worth booking ahead to secure your slot of choice (especially if you need a skating aid) and don't forget to bring some gloves and a pair (or two) of thick socks for extra comfort.

There's something rather special about skating on an open-air ice rink in Glasgow city centre, with the crisp winter air and festive atmosphere all around.

3. Visit Santa in his grotto

The chance to visit Santa in his festively decorated grotto is the stuff childhood dreams are made of. The excitement is palpable as families wait outside for their turn to be invited in. Entering into the whimsical space and catching sight of the old fella himself is a truly magical moment for kids. It's a heartwarming experience for parents too, as the children gather round to talk to Santa and tell him their Christmas wishes. There'll be time for photos and a small memento gift before he wishes you a merry Christmas, waving you off with a hearty laugh and memories to last a lifetime.

4. Indulge in some tasty treats

Be sure to arrive hungry because Glasgow's Christmas markets are a feast for the senses. The air is filled with enticing aromas of sizzling bratwurst, freshly baked pretzels and crispy hog roasts and you'll soon find yourself drawn to the food stalls brimming with gastronomic treats. Indulge in a hot Belgian waffle drizzled with chocolate or a French crêpe made expertly in front of you. Sample a charcuterie board of delicious meats and cheeses. Or warm up cold hands with a steaming cup of mulled, spiced cider or Baileys hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream. The Festival Bar in George Square is always buzzing, while over at St. Enoch Square, you'll find a marshmallow-toasting station, as well as a Bavarian moose bar and swing grill.

5. Pick up the perfect Christmas gift

Of course, a big draw to Glasgow's Christmas markets is a chance to do some shopping, and with over 50 seasonal chalets it's a great place to pick up some thoughtful presents for your loved ones. As you wander through the stalls - brimming with handcrafted goods, artisan products and festive decorations – you're sure to find something perfect for everyone on your list. From beautifully crafted candles and hand-knitted scarves to locally made jewellery and colourful wooden toys, it's a treasure trove of seasonal inspiration. Unlike shopping in chain stores, the market allows you to find one-of-a-kind gifts with a story behind them, and often buy directly from the artisans themselves.

: St. Enoch Square is located next to the main shops in Glasgow so you can combine your trip to the market with some high street Christmas shopping too. The Aparthotel Adagio Glasgow Central is ideally located so you won't have to carry your gifts too far.

6. Take the ultimate festive photo

With sparkling lights, beautifully decorated stalls and charming winter scenes, Glasgow's Christmas markets are the perfect setting for festive photos, with every turn offering an ever-more photogenic backdrop. From the glow of the giant Christmas tree or the windmill chalets, falling over on the ice rink or a cosy moment sipping mulled wine with friends, you'll want to keep your camera handy at all times. Capture cute stills of your little ones posing in Santa's snow globe or riding on the 'runaway train' at St. Enoch's Market. Or why not set up a classic Christmas selfie while riding the iconic Ferris wheel? Whether it's for family Christmas cards or your Instagram account, photo opportunities abound.

Top tip:
Be sure to switch your camera to night mode and turn off your flash. Why not experiment with lower exposures to capture those atmospheric slo-mo images?

7. Dance the night away

Night owls can dance to their heart's content at the silent disco on George Square, where you'll put on some special headphones and select your choice of tunes. You'll find regular live performances in the Community Hub, which showcases the talents of local artists. Expect a full line-up of Christmas-themed entertainment in the form of singers, dancers and musicians, as well as surprise guests making an appearance on stage. Ibis Style Glasgow Centre George Square puts you right in the heart of the action, allowing you to soak up the festive vibes by day and night. Don't forget to plan your route back ahead of time to ensure a safe and enjoyable evening.
