Singapore Zoo Guide: How to Make the Most of Your Visit

Plan your visit to Singapore's wildlife parks with practical tips, highlights, and what to know before you go.

In brief

One of the best things to do in Singapore is visit the wildlife parks located within Mandai Wildlife Reserve.

Singapore's wildlife parks include Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, and Rainforest Wild Asia.

You can make the most of your time at Singapore's zoo by purchasing tickets online ahead of your visit.

Singapore’s zoos offer an extraordinary, immersive experience for visitors of all ages. Singapore’s wildlife parks sit within Mandai Wildlife Reserve, home to five parks: Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, and Rainforest Wild Asia.

Each one focuses on a different type of wildlife experience, from daytime rainforest walks to nocturnal tram rides, and canopy treks.

This guide covers what to see at each park, the best experiences to book and how to plan your visit.

Best experiences across Singapore wildlife parks

Beyond the main trails, Mandai offers a few bookable experiences worth planning ahead for, especially with children.

Breakfast in the Wild

Start your morning with a buffet breakfast at Ah Meng Restaurant inside Singapore Zoo. Animal ambassadors including orangutans, African penguins, a sea lion and a Bengal eagle owl appear on rotation between 9:15am and 10:00am. You eat while the animals are brought out by their keepers, who share stories about each species.

Breakfast in the Wild runs daily from 9:00am to 10:30am and requires a separate booking on top of your zoo admission.

Animal feeding sessions

Singapore Zoo runs daily feeding sessions where you can hand-feed elephants, giraffes, white rhinos and giant tortoises. Check the Mandai website for current times, as schedules vary by animal and season.

Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo opens daily from 8:30am to 6:00pm (last entry 5:00pm).

The zoo uses an open-concept layout, which means most enclosures use moats and landscaping instead of cages. It is spread across 28 hectares with over 4,200 animals.

KidzWorld

KidzWorld is the zoo's family zone, with seven indoor and outdoor areas. It includes the Ranger Buddies Quest, Play Trees playground, Splish Splash water maze and around 250 animal residents including rabbits, dogs, cats, ponies and goats. If you are visiting with young children, this is worth building your day around.

Fragile Forest

Fragile Forest is a 20,000-cubic-metre biodome that mimics a tropical rainforest. You walk through it at different levels, passing Malayan flying foxes, lemurs, butterflies, mousedeer and birds. It is one of the most immersive exhibits in the zoo and works well early in the morning when the animals are most active.

Elephant feeding

You can hand-feed the zoo's herd of five female Asian elephants in the Elephants of Asia zone. Sessions run daily at set times. Keepers explain elephant behaviour, conservation challenges and how the zoo cares for the herd.

Tip: Check the Mandai website before your visit for the latest show times and any schedule changes.

Night Safari

The Night Safari opens daily from 6:30pm to 12:00am. Entry is divided into timed slots at 7:15pm, 8:15pm, 9:15pm and 10:15pm, with last entry at 11:15pm.

This is the world's first nocturnal wildlife park, home to over 900 animals. It focuses on species that are active after dark, including the Malay flying lemur, Malayan tapir and the greater one-horned rhinoceros.

How to explore

Start with the Safari Adventure Tram, which takes you through six geographical zones with live commentary. After the tram, walk the four trails on foot for closer views of animals you cannot see from the ride. The Fishing Cat Trail and Leopard Trail are two of the most popular.

Creatures of the Night

This is the park's main animal presentation, running at 7:30pm, 8:30pm and 9:30pm daily. Seats must be reserved online up to two hours before each show.

Tip: The 7:15pm slot on a weekday is the quietest. Animals tend to be most active early in the evening.

River Wonders

River Wonders opens daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm (last entry 5:00pm).

This is Asia's first river-themed wildlife park. Its zones are modelled on real rivers, including the Amazon, Ganges and Nile. It houses over 11,000 animals across 260 species, with a focus on freshwater life including fish, reptiles and amphibians.

Giant Panda Forest

Giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia live in the air-conditioned Giant Panda Forest. Viewing hours run from 9:30am to 6:00pm.

Amazon River Quest

This boat ride takes you past river otters, manatees, jaguars and other Amazon species. It operates from 10:00am to 6:00pm, weather permitting.

Bird Paradise

Bird Paradise opens daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm (last entry 5:00pm).

Located at Mandai Wildlife WEST (20 Mandai Lake Road), Bird Paradise spans 17 hectares and is home to over 3,500 birds from more than 400 species. It has eight walk-through aviaries, each designed to reflect a different global biome, from tropical forests to waterfall environments.

Highlights include the Penguin Cove, feeding sessions with lories and pelicans, and two daily bird presentations at the Sky Amphitheatre: Predators on Wings (10:30am, 2:30pm) and Wings of the World (12:30pm, 5:00pm).

Rainforest Wild Asia

Rainforest Wild Asia opens daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm (last entry 5:00pm). High-element activities such as Wild Cavern Adventure may close earlier, usually around 4:00pm.

This is the newest park at Mandai Wildlife Reserve and Asia's first wildlife adventure park. It is home to 36 animal species, with routes that take you from cavern to canopy rather than along one standard loop.

Two ways to explore

  • Elevated Walkway: an accessible route with canopy views and step-free access for families with prams and older visitors.
  • Forest Treks: a more rugged route with boulder crossings, log bridges, suspended walkways, tunnels, caves and streams. Parts of the trek pass through a free-roaming langur habitat.

Standout zones

  • The Karsts: home to Francois' langurs, a species new to Singapore.
  • The Cavern: inspired by the Mulu Caves in Sarawak.
  • Rock Cascade: where you can watch Malayan tigers in one of the park's largest habitats.

Tip: Allow around three hours to cover the main trails without rushing.

Conservation at Mandai Wildlife Reserve

Mandai Wildlife Reserve runs breeding programmes for endangered species, including the Sumatran orangutan and Malayan tiger. Both programmes aim to increase population numbers and support genetic diversity for critically threatened species.

Visitors can support conservation directly through donations at the parks or by purchasing a Friends of Mandai membership, which funds habitat preservation, species recovery and education outreach.

Frequently asked questions about Singapore Zoo

How long should I spend at each park?

Allow roughly four to six hours for Singapore Zoo if you want to see the main zones, catch a show and eat. River Wonders and Bird Paradise each need two to three hours. Rainforest Wild Asia takes about three hours. Night Safari runs from 6:30pm and most visitors spend two to three hours. Add extra time for KidzWorld if you have young children.

Can I visit Singapore Zoo and Night Safari on the same day?

Yes. Singapore Zoo closes at 6:00pm and Night Safari opens at 6:30pm, so you can do both back to back. That makes a full day of around 12 hours. If that feels too long, especially with children, split them across two days. ibis Singapore Novena is six stops from Khatib, where the Mandai shuttle departs.

Where can I eat inside the parks?

Singapore Zoo has around 10 eateries, including Chomel Bistro, Chawang Bistro, KFC and Ah Meng Restaurant. Expect to pay SGD $10 to $20 per meal. River Wonders has Mama Panda Kitchen and a Starbucks. Bird Paradise has cafes near the aviaries. You can leave and re-enter on the same ticket.

How many days do I need for all five parks?

Two to three days is a comfortable pace. Start day one early at Singapore Zoo, then do Night Safari in the evening. On day two, pair River Wonders and Bird Paradise in the morning, then fit Rainforest Wild Asia into the afternoon.

Do I need to book tickets and shows in advance?

Yes, for most things. Buy general admission online through the Mandai website. Night Safari uses timed entry slots (7:15pm, 8:15pm, 9:15pm and 10:15pm) and popular times sell out early. Creatures of the Night and Breakfast in the Wild each need a separate booking. Feeding sessions and the Amazon River Quest are first come, first served.
