Getting to TRIBE Krakow Old Town hotel couldn’t be simpler, which is exactly how we like to arrive somewhere new. We head out of Kraków Główny station and straight into Galeria Krakowska mall – not a detour, but the most direct route – past international fashion brands, cafés and that unmistakable city hum. Within five minutes door to door, we’re standing in front of our hotel.
The first thing we notice? It’s wonderfully calm. Despite being so close to the station and just minutes from the Old Town, this side street is discreetly tucked away. Proximity without the chaos, just like the TRIBE philosophy of “more for less”.
From the outside, TRIBE Krakow Old Town manages something quite rare: it blends in and stands out at the same time. The exterior is striking, clad in a green copper alloy that references Cracovian Modernism and the traditional rooftops of the Old Town. Depending on the light, the surface shifts subtly in tone – an intriguing hint at how it will continue to evolve as the patina develops over time.
The building is new, yet it feels respectful of its surroundings, a UNESCO-protected area. At six storeys high, the hotel sits comfortably among the neighbouring classical buildings and office blocks. And then there’s the TRIBE logo, quietly popping out from the façade, letting us know that while this building understands its context, it also has its own personality. The exterior design invites curiosity and further exploration – and we're more than ready to step inside.
The big difference: As Krakow’s first true lifestyle hotel, it’s perfect for modern travellers who want a high-end feel at a fair price.
The moment we walk through the doors, we wonder: Is this a hotel or an art gallery? The answer, of course, is both. There are several sculptures in the lobby – part of TRIBE’s private art collection – and we are drawn to a twisted, black-and-white rectangular frame. The discreet QR code next to the piece tells us that it’s by Kinga Nowak, a Krakow artist.
The atmosphere is theatrical yet inviting: red curtains frame parts of the walls, the lighting is deliberately moody, patterned tiles catch the eye. The TRIBE signature scent – zesty grapefruit, aromatic clove, warm amber – mixes subtly with the smell of coffee drifting from the nearby bar.
Even check-in here breaks with tradition in the best possible way. The team greets us on the same side of the reception desk, creating an interaction that feels personal rather than transactional, as if we’re being welcomed into someone’s home. Dressed in T-shirts and jumpers rather than suits, they strike the perfect balance between relaxed and professional. We’re so used to the old formalities that it’s slightly unexpected at first, but we love it.
Good to know: All the reception staff are locals with great recommendations on what to do and where to go. Not in the mood to chat? There’s a digital concierge in the lobby.
Our TRIBE Extra room is just as artistic and unconventional. As soon as we step inside, the lights come on automatically (no need to insert our keycard into a slot), giving a small but satisfying sense of arrival. The colour palette is calming: grey-blue tones complemented by warm lighting, with a few bold accents that prevent it from feeling like yet another boringly neutral space.
And the bed! Our TRIBE signature queen bed is elevated, substantial and ultra comfy. It’s also practical, with a generous space underneath for storing our suitcases. There are design details everywhere: a Tom Dixon chair in a rich orange-red hue, black rail lighting, framed artwork inspired by the 20th-century Polish School of Posters movement.
Time for a quick refreshment. Should we make Nespresso, or cups of tea using the clever water purifier, boiler and dispenser? We definitely go with the latter, as the sleek machine is such a novelty. It’s tempting to settle in with our beverage and the large smart TV, but we’re also hungry. So we freshen up with the refillable Kevin Murphy bath products and head back down.
Our favourite room: The TRIBE Extra has just that bit more space, plus city views. But no matter which room category you choose, all the amenities are the same.
The restaurant–bar, on the lower ground floor, is intimate and loungey. The menu offers pan-Asian flavours, a surprising but boldly deliberate choice in a city already rich with Polish dining options. We start with a Set of Bites, choosing pulled pork bao, lobster onigiri and tempura prawns from a long selection of sharing plates. They’re all beautifully presented, delicious and just the right size to set us up for our main: the signature Korean fried chicken. To our delight, the dish comes with little paintbrushes for dabbing on the three sauces – sesame, teriyaki and Szechuan. Because who doesn’t like playing with their food? The meal pairs perfectly with our cocktails, which are also Asian-inspired with intriguing flavour notes like gochujang, lychee and jasmine rice.
We have barely enough room for dessert... but cannot resist ordering some. The chocolate sticky toffee is indulgent, with a miso caramel sauce teasing just a hint of umami. But the surprise star of the sweet treats has to be the fried ice cream – a light, crisp panko exterior encasing smooth mango sorbet. It’s a fitting end to a fun yet refined meal.
The heart of TRIBE Krakow Old Town is the Social Hub, and everyone’s here – from suited professionals tapping away on laptops to locals chatting and lingering over drinks. A curated playlist of hip hop and R&B sets an easy urban rhythm, and the mix of seating and tables means everyone can find their own corner. We sink into a plush sofa and lose ourselves in the hotel’s eclectic collection of coffee-table books, from Polish design to Pop Art and Hitchcock.
The next day, we discover that morning brings a different energy to the restaurant. Breakfast is served buffet-style, and the focus is firmly on quality and freshness, with a thoughtfully curated selection. We help ourselves to freshly squeezed orange juice and a fluffy slice of shokupan (Japanese milk bread). Travellers with larger appetites will appreciate classics like scrambled eggs and viennoiseries, plus enticing Asian options like congee (rice porridge) with yummy toppings. There’s also an outdoor terrace, making breakfast feel like a gentle extension of the city – when the weather allows – rather than a routine pit stop before sightseeing.
Speaking of which, it’s time to head out. Location is one of TRIBE Krakow Old Town’s superpowers. It’s a picturesque seven-minute walk to Rynek Główny, one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe. The route takes us past the imposing Barbican fortress and through the 14th-century St. Florian’s Gate. Pavement cafés, gift shops and colourful townhouses line the way to the historic plaza, from which the city opens up in every direction.
We stroll to St. Mary’s Basilica, its mismatched Gothic bell towers a reminder that imperfection can still be iconic. The taller one plays an hourly bugle call which stops abruptly mid-tune to commemorate a legendary watchman shot by a Tatar arrow while warning the city in 1241. Wawel Castle is next on our itinerary, a short walk away towards the Vistula River. This medieval hilltop stronghold has it all – royal chambers, Renaissance courtyards, legends of a dragon lurking below – and we spend a few enjoyable hours immersing ourselves there.
This evening, we’re planning to check out the nightlife in the old Jewish quarter, known for its architecture and bohemian vibe. But for now, it’s back to the conviviality of TRIBE Krakow Old Town.
Insider tip: There’s a 24/7 Grab & Go counter with ready meals, pastries, salads and drinks – perfect for a quick bite or if you’re coming in late. Oh, and breakfast is served until noon!
