Our stay was nice, the staff were helpful and the breakfast good. The hotel itself is a little tired, not really up to the standards of a continental Mercure. However, the reason we chose this hotel is because it advertised accessible rooms. My mother can walk, but struggles with any kind of stairs. The only room with a walk in shower was as far away from reception as possible and down 5 steps through a door too close to the top of the stairs. The room door would not stay open. The walk in shower was up a large step and there were no handrails of any sort. Apparently the other two accessible rooms which were closer and would have enabled wheelchair access had bathtubs. According to the staff the hotel is going through a renovation. It needs it. The heater in my room was rusty, and the window not opened for many months. One look at the insect life on the outside discouraged me from forcing it open, even though some fresh air would have been welcome. I appreciate it faces onto the gardens, so maybe some form of insect screen could be in place. Please please please, when designing accessible rooms, ask those who need it exactly what they need. My mother would be pleased to provide you with a list.

The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The hotel looks like it has been recently painted. The room we had was clean but what let it down was the rusty radiator, doors missing on the wardrobe and in the bathroom the tile grout, fixings and bath had seen better days which I took photos of. This is rated as a 4 star hotel which I find hard to believe. I have stayed at the Ashdown Park Hotel which is also 4 stars. Compared to the Ashdown Park Hotel the Mercure Tunbridge Wells Hotel should have its star rating reviewed.
