Fantastic hotel. Staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful from the moment we checked in until we left. Our room on the 5th floor was immaculate. Loads of space and really comfortable bed. We used the gym and pool/jacuzzi while staying here which were perfect after a long day of walking around. Location of the hotel was great for my wife and I. Castle, Royal Mile and Grassmarket all within 15 mins walk and other attractions were within walking distance if you like to get your steps up while on holiday. We had breakfast every morning while staying here and the food was beautiful. Probably the nicest hotel breakfast food I’ve ever had (loved their haggis). Great selection of food as well. Would 100% stay here again.

Whilst the location of this hotel was perfect for us and all the staff we encountered were very pleasant and polite we were left very disappointed and unimpressed with our stay. The room was dreadful. We were in a family room on the 4th floor, room 448, which is not really fit for purpose. Stained carpets and soiled furniture with worn and torn bobbly sheets, old smelly brick like pillows and an unbearably hot room. The separate toilet lacked a sink?? Such a poor design, very unhygienic. The bathroom itself comprised of a short bath and separate shower cubicle which had a loose drain cover which cut my foot and a leaky shower seal. It also lacked the toiletries I would expect from a four star hotel. No hair conditioner or moisturisers, which I assumed we would have when packing for our trip. I recall asking about air con before booking our trip and was assured that rooms had air conditioning, which isn’t really the case. The rooms have a heating/cooling system but it is not possible to set a temperature for your room. The sign above the control states it is not an air-con unit. We were so hot it made sleeping impossible. The heat coupled with the very loud noise of the cooling system were unbearable. When booking the room there were no other rooms available online, which is how we ended up with the family room, so we did not bother to complain. I prefer to use Novotel when travelling as they are usually immaculately clean, well presented with comfortable rooms and good quality bedding. I think perhaps we were just very unlucky with our room. If we had been staying more than one night I would certainly have raised our issues with staff. I feel very disappointed as we chose a 4 star hotel as we didn’t want to slum it or have a poor nights sleep. At almost £300 for room only, it was not value for money or an experience I would like to repeat.
