The hotel is quiet, clean and the old buildings fit perfectly with the modern renovation. Everybody from the staff is really nice and helpfull. A special thank you to Joy from breakfast and Dara from Guest relations. Its 9 and not 10 points because my kids didnt understand the strict kids hours at the pool. The hotel treasure hunt was really nice. The hotel is family friendly but it seems that familys with little kids arent the main target group. We had some troubles with the pre-ordered birthday cake, but those were minor and we had a wonderful stay nontheless.

Beautiful building and scenery. Room was ready early, however I was promised a special surprise for my mum who was celebrating her birthday and it was not in our room upon arrival. It came few hours later. Nice pool and jacuzzi but more attention is necessary around cleanliness. There was a half chewed apple left around the back of the jacuzzi. Lovely spa experience, Karen was absolutely amazing. Dinner in Kathleen’s kitchen was nice, again requested a happy birthday dessert and it was not delivered, just normally presented. Breakfast was the biggest let down, stood outside the room with a line of people, this was not an issue however the table we were facing had empty/half empty glasses infront, and about two croissants on a plate- no one to clear it, not a great impression. Was brought to our table, and immediately left to our own devices, no explanation where we would find anything. Grabbed some hot food which was ok, tried to get coffee from the machine - couldn’t as there was no water in it and filter had to be changed- again no staff to fix error. No staff approached us throughout our breakfast. Eventually half way through I made eye contact with waitress Amy who came over and asked were we ok, I replied we have not been looked after at all. I asked for tea and two coffees and toast. Coffees came out, my tea came out in a pot, not sure where I was supposed to pour it considering I got no cup? Toast did not come out at all!!! And that was our only interaction with a staff member throughout our whole breakfast experience. Left quiet disappointed.

My wife and I stay 2-3 times per year, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries etc. In April 2025 I also brought my company (30+ people) for a 3-day offsite, so I’m a very good customer of Carton House.
We’ve always enjoyed our stay and this time was no different, we had a nice time overall, the environment, the amenities, surroundings are all lovely. We visit Carton House to relax and switch off.
Have been a regular customer for years now, I see decline in the quality of the service since those early visits. There were a few examples this time round.
Dinner, we tend to switch between Kathleen’s Kitchen and the coach house depending on the time of year. This time we went to Kathleen’s, the food was good, well prepared and we enjoyed it, but the menu hasn’t seemed to have change in the past year, and it slightly boring a repetitive at this stage for returning guests. If you’re visiting for the first time, this obviously wouldn’t be an issue, again, the food was very good.
Breakfast in the Morrison room has always been a treat, but this time around it wasn’t good, there were clearly too few staff, most of the tables were left uncleaned and unattended. The tables that were free were not set, basic cutlery was nowhere to be seen. Breakfast, both the selection and the food was only average and didn’t at all suit the setting or come close to past experience.
The final and biggest issue, we were double charged for our stay. Despite me asking two or three times at check out, I knew leaving that I would have a problem and need to call back. Basically, when I checked, a €100 hold was placed on my card (normal enough), when checking out I settled the remaining balance using the same card. Instead of updating the hold amount, I was charged a new transaction. I asked 2-3 times if the previous hold amount would the. be released, or as I suspected updated to the full amount of my stay, thus charging me again. As I suspected, I was charged when leaving and again overnight when I assume that days bill run were processed. At the time of writing, I’m waiting for a refund to be issued.
One thing that was apparent throughout our stay, there was an obvious lack of experienced staff or management around. We spent two days in and around the hotel. I’m sure it’s not easy to run a hotel of that size, but there needs to be leaders present at all hours of the day and visible, supporting, reception, the restaurants, the bar area etc. it’s my perception that quality standards are slipping because leadership standards are slipping. I suspect that persistent and rigorous attention to detail isn’t there.
As I said, I’m a good customer, we spend a considerable amount of money for what is a one night stay, several times per year. We don’t mind paying for good service in nice hotels. But we didn’t get good service, and it’s not the first time.
Overall we still enjoy our visit, but when spending what we spend each time we stay, we may start to look elsewhere.

Everything was superior except for two things. First, limited space to unpack clothing. Second, our AC did not work. Thankfully, it was not hot, but, as Americans, we're used to having AC and we weren't comfortable. The response to this was we'll look into and providing an ineffective fan, then no follow. Asked again a day later, same response and no follow up again during 3 day stay. Others in our group also did not have AC.
