Christmas at the Mercure Bedford

We booked a privilege room over Christmas for a Bridge congress. The Bridge was excellent but the hotel was not. The junior staff were brilliant but could not cope with the incompetence of the managerial staff and those above them. The hotel was permanently cold so much so that I bought two hot water bottles. We were told to keep the curtains closed to retain the heat - but we had booked a room over the river to take on the fantastic views. We discovered a broken window latch which we reported and a lady came and photographed the latch and that was the last we saw or heard from her. In the wind it banged all night and I solved the problem by stuffing a towel over it which kept falling off. My wife asked for an extra pillow not a big deal but we were told that there were no extra pillows in the hotel!!! The food was ok but that would be very generous on our part. Christmas dinner I chose prawn cocktail. The prawns were the smallest shrimps you have ever seen a smidgen of mayonnaise and loads of lettuce. The sprouts and parsnips were the stars of the main course , the pig in blanket was a runt in a handkerchief, the turkey was tough and the stuffing was cremated. Had to go and ask for the cranberry sauce. The Christmas pudding was an innocuous slab. How do you get 50 rather solid rectangular slabs out of a half sphere of pudding I'll never know as I doubt neither do Mercure. Clearly it has been baked in a oven tray and cut into rather uninteresting slabs. Other drivers have high lighted these problems but still they persist.

My partner and I usually stay at the Mecure several times a year for many years. Usually the the rooms are in good order. This time however a very drafty window compelled us to ask for a room change, the temperature in the room was uncomfortable on a windy and chilly December evening..The receptionist Aiysha did her best to help and sorted a room change promptly.

Very impressive. Our Christmas party was really great. Food,service was very good . Staff are every friendly and helpful. Much better than our last visit .

Great atmosphere. Friendly staff, breakfast was tasty and room was spacious. Room was tidy when i arrived. I went down for breakfast after 8pm and food was still available, hot and plenty of space to sit overlooking the river. Staff were friendly, polite and professional
