During my recent stay at Mercure Kyoto Station, I was left with the impression that the arrival experience did not fully reflect the sense of hospitality one naturally associates with Japan. The check-in process was handled efficiently; however, the interaction felt restrained and somewhat detached. The staff member assisting me maintained limited eye contact, spoke very softly with little tonal variation, and did not appear particularly engaged. As a returning member, there was no acknowledgment upon arrival, and appreciation for my membership was mentioned only briefly at the conclusion of the process. I also noticed that several instructions were communicated using “make sure” — for example, to inform the restaurant of my room number and to redeem the drink voucher at the bar. While clearly intended as practical guidance, the repeated phrasing introduced a directive tone that felt at odds with the effortless warmth one hopes to experience at the start of a stay. Additionally, I was informed that my room had been upgraded. However, the room assigned was precisely the category I had originally reserved. Being told it was an upgrade, without first verifying the booking details, was somewhat perplexing and regrettably gave the impression of a lack of attentiveness. Accuracy in such matters is fundamental, particularly in a professional hospitality setting. Beyond the front desk, I observed that staff members, including those in the restaurant, did not offer greetings when encountering guests. In Japan, where even the simplest acknowledgment conveys attentiveness and care, the absence of such gestures was particularly noticeable. The overall atmosphere felt more procedural than intuitively hospitable. First impressions inevitably shape the narrative of a stay. I share these observations with the hope that they may be helpful in further refining and elevating the guest experience.
