Extremely disappointing Mecure hotel

Robyn L TripAdvisor review

We were allocated Lodge Room #50 at check in. The air con was not working, maintenance called and batteries supplied. These units are very old and we ran the air con for 6 hours to reach 21 deg. The fridge freezer was totally blocked with ice build up which had spewed outside the freezer obstructing the door closure. The mouldy smell in the room was overbearing. No towels in the bathroom and the toilet seat was too small so you were sitting on half the bowl. Tap faucet lifted out of basin. The TV didn't work. The conference facility was utilised 2 nights of our stay and there is no boom gate to restrict attendees at the conference centre from using the Mecure guest parking. It can become very noisy when the conference guest are leaving the hotel. The furnishings are very, very old and outdated. The brick paving paths are subsiding is some areas and are a definite safety issue, especially in the dark. This property is advertised as part of the Accor group and it is not a good representation of the Accor standard we have come to respect. I should have taken the time to research the reviews of this property before locking into a 3 night stay.

We were completely amazed by this exceptional property in regional Victoria. For a short stay, we didn't need a particularly fancy hotel but thankfully stumbled upon this wonderful property. The Mercure Ballarat is a destination in itself and everything about it said that the management and staff care. Our staff was as near to perfect as it could have been. The grounds are superb, beautiful and relaxing. The room we had was spacious and comfortable, well-appointed and practical in design. The restaurant meals we had were all exceptionally good and the staff could not have been more attentive or helpful. Special mention to Shiela and Annabel in the restaurant. Can't wait to return.

For a positive, the front desk staff was great -- professional and very people oriented. Not so much the breakfast staff. It's been a couple years, but I've stayed here quite regularly. Saying the buffet breakfast was rather ordinary is a compliment. I had coffee and some bacon, but the other hot entree (eggs) was not edible. Perhaps I was in a different section this time, but I don't remember the rooms being quite so dated and tired.

Room with NO view

This is the worst accommodation experience we have had so far in travelling. We booked a lodge room with one king bed for a stopover, and upon check-in, we were given room 78, which turned out to be a small "dungeon" room with tall walls on all sides except for a row of small low windows at the ceiling line along one wall, with absolutely NO view of the outside unless one is over 2m tall, at the end of a damp smelling corridor, and without the chairs and coffee table depicted in the photos of the lodge room. We went back to the reception and demanded for the lodge room with one king bed matching the photos of the lodge room on their website and on our reservation, which we eventually were given room 90, but without any explanations and apology for the earlier "dungeon" room. Nevertheless, room 90 has a large wheelie bin for general waste outside one of its windows beside its door but at least is matching the photos of the lodge room on their website. BUT why would anyone place a large garbage wheelie bin outside a guest room beside the guest room window!!! Upon checkout, I was told the "dungeon" room 78 was meant to be my room upgrade benefit to a Superior Room since I am a gold member of Accor Live Limitless, which is even more shocking. How would anyone classify such a "dungeon" room with less fittings a Superior Room! If such is the standard of a Superior Room at this place, one should really think twice before booking a Superior Room at this place. Absolutely unbelievable treatment for a gold member of Accor Live Limitless, if this is really what they call VIP treatment of Accor Loyalty Member at this motel.

Had a disabled access room. I would advise that it is not truly accessible. Car parking is under cover, however there is not sufficient room for opening car doors and no access for walkers or wheelchairs to get to the room without going over a concrete car stopper. The toilet is not a standard disabled suite and has 2 small grab rails. Shower also has no grable rail, but it has a wall mounted seat, which was sadly mouldy on the wall stoppers. Breakfast was good & ran well most days. Reception staff were at times confused, as I added an additional night to my stay. The room was serviced most days. However there were 3 of us and I had to ask for an additional towel so we could all shower lol . Lovely surroundings and garden paths. Would have been great if they still had there pool for 38 degree days
