Decently good hotel with a few quirks

Decent hotel, we had a mostly positive experience, something I was apprehensive about as I read some negative reviews regarding service levels and treatment of Indian tourists. But thankfully it was fine- as long as you’re not expecting south east Asia or Middle East levels of hospitality , and frankly , the language barrier doesn’t help either - as not all staff speak English. But allowing for those differences- I had a good experience over all and will even come back given the positives. Positives - Fantastic location - major sights are walking distance, and yandex is easy if you’re not a walker - Good food though vegetarians may find it limiting beyond a few meals. - Proximity to good cafes and restaurants. We loved Navat, Pro Coffee nearby. - Front desk usually had English speaking people and was generally helpful - though you tend to have to ask for things you may get told automatically in other countries - Breakfast was not extensive but it was sufficient and tasty, with enough fruit, fibre and protein options, though those who need Indian food may find it wanting. - Indoor temperature controlled pool ( not warm, but usable in winter ) Cons - small rooms, it gets snug if it you have a child and need extra bed. Go for the suite if you have a child. - housekeeping tends to not tidy up the bedding if you leave stuff on it like clothes. We noticed this on a couple of days across rooms ( we had three rooms as a family). If we did a basic tidy up, then housekeeping put the bedding back properly. This is different from staff attitude in other countries but we got used to it. I’m not sure if that’s a true con, but just thought I would mention it so that people aren’t surprised when they come back to an unmade bed in the evening. Staff is polite mostly, if somewhat curt, but this I expected and so wasn’t phased by it. It’s just a quirk of the land. A couple of staff were chatty as well, usually the ones most comfortable in English. You may even find some Bollywood fans among the locals! As some people have noted , you have to fill a carafe from the filter on each floor as your drinking water supply in each room, but I think this is fine - it didn’t bother us too much and it’s good for sustainability. We did buy a few bottles of water from a supermarket for the very young and old people in our group. You can also order water from room service ( at a cost). Overall, Kazakh people are not overly smiley and friendly and as long as you accept that as their temperament, you will be fine. They are usually helpful if you ask, and Google translate works well and every one is used to using it. Almaty is an immensely walkable city with wide open sidewalks and a good food scene. Yandex app works very well, and takes away the English issues for getting around. I didn’t need a local sim even, I just activated Yandex app from my home country (India) before travel and was good to go.

Exceptional staff especially at the bar named AI sultan and Anvar- v polite - reception staff als all of them very very helpful. Kid friendly property with great location. Everything was walking distance and ice skating right outside the hotel -

Terrible Decision to choose this hotel. Staff is very business oriented mindset.

Rooms are very small, No cleanliness, No refill of Amenities, Not a Value for Money, Not designed for a Holiday stay. Hotel staff just ask our name and straight forward handed over the room keys. No explanation given about hotel overview. The surprise element is there is no water bottle offered in room. Price Value Equation is totally negative. Room cleaning is not done despite informing them. Even Toilet seat is broken and they have not fixed till the time we had raised the voice. Above that ACCOR group do not take any responsibility to respond. I sent two messages but not responded. Also, hotel informed us that we will not get loyalty points because we had booked through agency. Overall brand has a negative image.

My stay here did not start well as the hotel messed up the airport transfer on arrival and I was left stranded at 0430. They did, though, apologide with complimentary fruit, wine and bottled water and a free airport transfer on departure. Otherwise I enjoyed my stay. The room was comfortable (not lavish but standard Novotel standard), although the desk was a bit small. Breakfast was good and the bar and restaurant were lively and provided a good selection of food and drinks. There is also a fairly well-equipped gym too which looks quite new (and a swimming pool, which I did not use). The location is also very central, though I did not have time to explore the city. I would be happy to stay there again.

I stayed at this hotel last October 2025. During my stay, I lost some money from my room. I noticed that the room had been cleaned while I was out, as several items were moved and the bed had been made. In addition, I also lost my phone charger from the room. When I reported this to the receptionist, her response was very unprofessional. She appeared frustrated, hit the keyboard. Overall, many of the staff were not hospitable, and the experience was disappointing.
