Got better after a bad start

Customer review rating 3.5/5

Not great to start with, booked through work via AmEx. When I arrived to check in I was informed there wasn't a room booked for me. To their credit the staff managed to secure me a room. Obviously a disconnect between our booking agent and the hotel.

Building very tired.

Building is in need of refurbishment. No Lifts to upper floors. Doors to bedrooms slam shut with a bang day and night. No Air conditioning in the bedrooms - had to rely on fans. Children from wedding receptions running around screaming. Floors seemed uneven. Star Rating is too high.

Reservation number: KQPLDMCT Reservation made by: Mr. Mark S. Room 205 Contact number 07… Good afternoon, I would like to pass on my disappointment when staying at your hotel this week. Firstly, I had booked a double room for two nights with breakfast booked for both mornings. When I arrived to check in, I was told that on the morning of the 14th the only breakfast slots available was from 8:45 meaning I was not able to have breakfast with you that morning as I was starting work at 8am that day. This was later refunded but I was able to book breakfast the following day the 15th (I will get to this later). When I went up to my room, the room was a twin and not a double as I had booked. When I returned to reception, I was told that this was all that was available as the hotel was full. Again, this was not what I booked and would not have booked the room if this was the only room available. The reception was very helpful and said that the room could be changed the following day, but this did not help matters that night. Add to this the window in the room could not be opened as the top window seemed to have been damaged as the window was warped and didn’t fit in the frame. I went to work on the morning of the 14th and returned to the hotel around 6pm I asked at reception if the room had been changed and had someone spoke to the manager regarding the issues and the rate that I had paid based on the issues the previous night. The lady on reception wasn’t sure but said if a message had been left for house keeping it would have been done. And asked me to check the room. I went to my room and then the key card didn’t work so I had to return down again to reception. And the receptionist programmed a new key and cam to check the key worked and the room had been changed to a double; It had not! So again, I went downstairs, and the lady arranged for the room to be changed while I had something to eat in the bar. I had been given two complimentary drinks at this point and was assured that when I returned to my room that it would have been changed to a double from a twin room. There was a long wait for food of around 45 minutes for a chicken burger and chips. Which again seems to be a little excessive for the number of staff that was working that night. And lastly but quiet minor. When I did get breakfast the morning of the 15th I was the first person there at 6:30am and already there was items not available on the full English breakfast which I find bizarre considering that hardly anyone was in the restaurant at that time. I travel to Bristol regularly for business and the whole experience made what was already a long couple of days feel even longer, coming into your hotel was supposed to be the relaxing part of the day but at times did feel harder than work its self and left me feeling reluctant to stay at a Mecure Hotel again. I do hope you address these issues for guests that do stay in the future. On a positive note, though the staff were incredibly friendly and so helpful and really did try and put things as right as they could. Thank you for taking the time to read this Best regards Mark S.

Nice location, BUT poor organisation

Breakfast on the first day was chaotic. Our order for a cooked Breakfast was taken when we were shown to our table & arrived before we had time to get our drinks & cereals. The bacon & sausage were over-cooked, & looked like they had been standing under a warming lamp for some time. The next 2 days the Breakfast was better organised. On check out we were presented with a bill for our stay which had already been paid for before we left home. The gentleman on reception was quite adamant that we had to pay but we refused showing all our documentation that we had paid. He said he would report our concerns to the Manager & get them to ring us the next day (9th September) but we are still waiting for the call (16th September) We think that the way we were treated in front of other guests on reception was disgusting & the Manager has not even bothered to ring us.

Great quiet easy access out of the way location near city.

Great easy access out of town quiet country hotel with beautiful grounds. Staff friendly and accommodating. Room lovely though bit dark so overall room and bathroom could do with little brightening up. Had to hunt down promised nespresso machine and purchase own capsules as told no delivery due and we stayed a week! Bit disappointed to find the mentioned pool/jacuzzi had been shut 5 years. Overall met our requirements for this stay. Would use again.

Well located with beautiful grounds/views

Very satisfactory - attended a family wedding and really appreciated the generous provision of seating options both outside and on the interior public areas egere we could meet to talk in small groups. For the evening event tables too large to allow conversations across whilst music playing, could have been scaled down

Anniversary Trip paid for as gift my our daughter.

Marion S. Couples - 13/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

My daughter bought us a Red Letter day experience and we chose your hotel to spend it. We were allocated a room right up in the eaves with no lift, and the room was tiny, dark and very very hot! We had to keep the fan on all night, but didn’t sleep a wink due to the noise and the heat. Your staff were very nice and cheerful and were happy to serve us, and the food was very nice indeed. However, during our dinner, the alarm was constantly beeping driving everyone mad, but the staff were unable to stop it. We had ordered our dessert, when the fire alarm went off which, as usual, we all ignored. The staff asked us to stand outside whilst they determined whether there was actually a fire (they did all they should have done to keep us safe) which there turned out not to be, thankfully! It was obvious that the alarm system was faulty, and I’m afraid that with the small, airless room and the alarm noises during our dinner, the trip was completely spoiled for us. I suppose we should have expected the worst room in the house since we were paying with a voucher, but we didn’t expect it and were thoroughly disappointed.

After a late check in due to the room not being ready , wasn’t really a problem as we were part of a wedding, got to the room at 5pm to find the beds weren’t made up, I spoke to receptionist & was told “ we will do it later” the attitude was absolutely disgusting & not something you would expect for front of house! The beds were finally made up at around 7pm after beds being moved around to fit into the room

Poor service , untrained staff

Lynda P. Families - 13/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Beautiful location but staff untrained and letting the hotel down, there are a few staff who work hard and carry the rest, 4 bar staff on for a wedding and not one of them know how to make a cappacino, which could of been solved if the staff had put the coffee out that the bride had paid for !! Breakfast 2 girls with no get up and go, we all booked a slot then had to wait for tables to be cleared , breakfast buffet table not topped up but full English was very good I booked in at 8.30 very busy, my mum came down at 9.15 to 2out of the 10 table occupied but all the others un cleared and no one to be found so she joined me and I had to call the waitress over to take her order and find her some cutlery as she didn’t bring any with her breakfast, Scottish make member of staff who had been at the wedding the day before was expectional and explained about staff shortages which I understand but please train and help your staff to do there job. The Grange at winterbourne is a fabulous venue and I hope the 3 weddings they have every week for the next 3 months get better service.

Great value, amazing building would be 10/10 if it hadn't been so hot. There were fans in the room which helped but the room was hotter than the hall or outside even with the window open wide I don't know why. It felt like a radiator was on but I couldn't see one. After a shower the room was stifling.

Attended a wedding. Room was very comfortable and clean. Only concern was that I am 70, my husband in his 60s and we were put in room 504 which meant two flights of stairs and the second set were very steep and narrow.

Victorian Manor House in all it's glory and decay

Customer review rating 1.0/5

Dafydd Business - 12/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

The long sweeping drive as you enter the property leads up to a delightful Victorian manor house. Upon entering the property, you see the magificant entrance way, with a dining room to the right, and glorious social areas for quaffing drinks. A wonderful ambiance. However, the room itself also feels like it harks from the victorian age, but was originally the steerage rooms. The décor is antiquated, there are minimal plug sockets, especially near the beds. Well in need of an uplift. The bathroom was a terrible experience. The sink pipes draining slowly, with part of the blockage being regurgitated through the drain. The bath area had black mould in the grouting, as did the mixer tap. There are also rotten floorboards under the lino meaning a mis-step getting out of the bath would result in injury. All of these issues were spotted either late at night or early morning, and were reported on checkout. The receptionist apologised and assured me the manager would be in touch - i'm still waiting to hear anything. I can't vouch for any of the other rooms, but if you're comfortable playing a socialite for the evening, and then not caring where you sleep, this is the hotel for you. Otherwise, I'd probably stay in a city centre hotel instead.

The bedrooms at the hotel were quite poor and in desperate need of an upgrade, not even a plug socket next to the bed for phone charging. The staff were lovely but there simply were not enough of them to service all the guests. Wont be staying again

Beautiful grounds, comfortable room

Anonymous Business - 10/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

My room was very comfortable, the meeting room was a little cramped for our group especially in COVID times. Breakfast was fine. The snacks and lunch for the meeting were excellent. The food offered in the evening was excellent but the service lacked a little polish. Eg main courses delivered before the starters had been cleared, a mix up with the food order. It felt like new wait staff had been employed but not fully trained yet so maybe that will improve. Overall this was a nice hotel in a quiet location but still well situated for Bristol

Country hotel set in loverly ground but a short drive to the city

TripAdvisor rating 5.0/5

gillians555 22/08/2021 TripAdvisor review

Staff were very welcoming and reception were waiting for us. Our room was lovely and our bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was a little older but clean and well washed. The hotel is set in its own beautiful grounds out in the country but just a stones throw from the city. For us it was our overnight on our way down to Devon and Cornwall and we will defiantly use it again. We had an excellent evening meal which we booked in advance, there was a very nice bar located in the hotel and we finished our stay with a full English breakfast our choice. There was also a Good vegan selection. Best of all, Parking was free and there was a large car park and I like the way there were pet water bowls set our around the hotel for your pets. We liked all of it.

Rather tired hotel;. Room deco dated and Bathroom in need of refurbishment. Tried to check in at 4pm but was told previous guests had not checked out as they were part of the wedding party - just not acceptable. Was however given another room after a lot of fuss. Room key didnt work at first so had to return to reception something we had to repeat a number of times

Forgetable short break

TripAdvisor rating 3.0/5

Alan267 28/07/2021 TripAdvisor review

As a user of Mercure Hotels before I thought I would be safe to book this one for a short break near Bristol but was very disappointed with the room. Service was let down by the fact that on arrival we found the sink blocked and despite requests for this to be fixed it was not. Also we found the shower very hard to use, perhaps because it was out of date. For the price of £11 each the cooked breakfast was satisfactory though I would not pay £16 for it.
