Absolutely lovely hotel in a great location close to Cotswolds villages. Room was spotless and had everything we needed, staff friendly and couldn’t do enough for us, we stayed 2 nights and will definitely be back. Sorviega on reception was super friendly and welcoming.

We had an enjoyable stay at Mercure Bowden Hall. The location is great, set in a quiet village, which made for a peaceful break. The only downside was the lack of a local pub within walking distance, which was a bit of a shame. The staff really stood out, fantastic, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. They were especially great with us and our dog, and the hotel is very pet friendly, which we appreciated. The food was good and tasty overall. We did have a slight issue with one meal, but it was handled quickly and professionally by the staff, which made a big difference. The hotel is well located for exploring, with easy access to Gloucester city, around a 10 minute drive away. There are also plenty of good walks nearby, including Nut Hill just behind the hotel, which is ideal if you’re travelling with a dog. The building could benefit from some modernising, and anyone with mobility issues may find parts of the hotel challenging as there are no lifts. Overall, a pleasant stay made even better by the welcoming and helpful staff.

Awful stay! And poor management

I booked this hotel for a 4-night family break in the Cotswolds but ended up leaving after just 3 nights due to how poor the experience was. Before booking, I had read mixed reviews and watched a few TikToks. While it was clear the hotel wasn’t modern, the photos suggested it would at least be clean and comfortable. As we planned to be out most of the day, that seemed acceptable. Unfortunately, the reality was very different. The hotel is extremely dated and tired, particularly the room we were initially given. The carpet looked filthy, and the floor felt so unclean that we wore our own slippers from home inside the room. The room also smelled musty and damp. On multiple occasions, we complained about a strong smell of weed in and around the hotel. As we were staying with children, this felt completely inappropriate and unsafe. We had to keep the windows open just to ventilate the room. The response from staff was limited to apologies and deodoriser spray. We were told they knew which guests were responsible but could not control it, which is not an acceptable response. This was meant to be a peaceful and relaxing break, yet there were loud building works and maintenance taking place every day from around 8am, including banging, drilling, and constant beeping. After raising this, the duty manager apologised and explained she had not even been informed that the works were happening. This lack of communication is unprofessional, and the disruption should have been disclosed in advance. The final straw came on our last day when we were moved to another room at the back of the hotel. This room was equally tired and run down, with visible signs of damp. There was a bug infestation on the walls, and the only solution offered was for staff to vacuum them up. By that evening, our children were starting to feel unwell, and we did not feel it was safe for our family to remain at the property. We made the decision to leave the hotel that night and check out early. I am shocked that this hotel has been allowed to operate with these ongoing issues. The cleanliness, maintenance standards, noise levels, and overall management response were unacceptable. I am particularly disappointed with how management failed to make this right. I attempted to resolve these issues privately with the hotel after our stay, but the response from guest services was dismissive and suggested that I had misunderstood the situation, rather than properly addressing the concerns raised. This review reflects our personal experience, and I would not recommend this hotel to families or anyone looking for a clean, safe, and relaxing stay.

Some of the issues raised, such as external odours, are unfortunately outside of our direct control, though our team responded promptly when this was reported. The maintenance work taking place was essential, and we apologise that the Duty Manager was not initially aware of the full details, including noise from equipment. Both rooms were inspected by our housekeeping and maintenance teams, and no visible signs of damp were identified. These rooms have since been occupied by other guests without similar concerns being raised. During your stay, goodwill gestures were offered, including 4,000 courtesy points and points for the night not stayed. Requests for status points were discussed, however loyalty status points cannot be awarded as a courtesy under programme rules, and this was explained at the time. Your main aim was to get to plantium status and reflective of your comments We regret that despite these efforts, you left disappointed and appreciate you sharing your experience. Recently attended a Christmas meal with my work. It was great - the food was delicious and so much of it. The staff were all lovely and attentive. My hotel room was spacious and clean. Everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed the evening. I highly recommend.

The staff were very welcoming, organised and attentive. The venue was very well presented, it was a lovely Christmassy atmosphere. The food was very good and decent portions. I received lot of very good feedback from all who attended, hope to come again next year.
