Disappointing and Uncomfortable Stay

TripAdvisor rating 1.0/5

Francisco N Families - TripAdvisor review

Unfortunately, our stay at this resort was far from pleasant, mainly due to cleanliness, maintenance, and noise issues. We stayed in a spa villa, which was clearly outdated and not properly maintained. The furniture was very old, and the villa was not clean at all. There was a strong, unpleasant smell throughout the room, which made it uncomfortable from the moment we arrived. When opening the cabinets where the blankets were stored, we were met with an overwhelming smell of mould and dust. The blankets themselves smelled old and unclean, making them unusable. The air conditioning units were in very poor condition, with visible mould on the blades and broken air direction panels. On top of that, the external air conditioning unit was installed extremely close to the cabin. It caused constant vibrations throughout the entire night. The vibration was so strong and continuous that we were unable to sleep properly during all three nights of our stay. The spa bath was another major issue. It was leaking and unable to hold water, and we could hear the sound of water leaking all night long, adding to the already unbearable noise situation. Overall, the lack of cleanliness, serious maintenance problems, and constant noise made our stay extremely uncomfortable. This resort does not meet the standards we expected, and unfortunately, we would not recommend it unless significant improvements are made. Food review: Sand & Wood (Breakfast & Dinner) Breakfast was very limited and extremely expensive for what was offered. Food items were not always available, and the overall quality did not match the price. The coffee tasted old, and hygiene was concerning — some mugs appeared not properly cleaned and had an unpleasant smell, similar to eggs. Dinner was also overpriced for the quantity served. More concerning, after dining there on the first night, my wife and daughter experienced vomiting episodes and stomach discomfort, which strongly suggests a food safety issue. Sandbar & Bistro This was the only place we encountered where all main meals were fried. There were no healthy options or proper meat dishes available. I ordered a burger that was undercooked and still bloody inside, mixed with the beetroot, which was both unappetizing and unacceptable from a food safety standpoint. Dune Restaurant The food itself was good; however, the experience was heavily affected by flies and bugs. We were bitten multiple times, leaving marks that lasted throughout the night and several days afterward. Additionally, there were no suitable options for children. In a resort setting, it is unrealistic to cater only to adults — families are clearly part of the guest profile and should be considered.

Great service, beautiful location. Clean well equipped rooms. I’d give the light show a miss as it’s a good concept but boring and quite dull

Dear longworthec, Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the great service, beautiful location, and the clean, well‑equipped rooms — it’s wonderful to know these aspects made your stay a positive one. We appreciate your comments about the light show. While many guests enjoy the concept, we understand it may not appeal to everyone, and your feedback is helpful as we continue to refine our experiences. We’re glad the rest of your visit was enjoyable and hope to welcome you back to K’gari again.

FresserOJK Couples - TripAdvisor review

We stayed at Kingfisher Bay Resort for two nights and were really disappointed overall. For a resort in such a beautiful location, the standard of accommodation and service is shockingly poor. You don’t even need high standards to think this!! The bathrooms had visible mould, the walls are paper thin, and it genuinely feels like the rooms haven’t been updated since the resort opened in the early 90s – not even a fresh coat of paint. Coming back to the room each day was depressing rather than relaxing, which is the last thing you want on a trip to Fraser Island. The resort was clearly short staffed. Every meal involved queuing for 10–15 minutes to be seated, and you’re expected to collect your own cutlery from a central station – which was often missing items anyway. The food itself was awful, easily the worst part of the stay, and completely unjustifiable given the prices. It feels like the resort relies heavily on the fact that options on the island are limited, so quality control just isn’t a priority. This might be understandable if it were cheap, but it absolutely isn’t. The whole experience was embarrassing for what is marketed as a premium resort. We originally thought we’d regret only booking two nights on the island, but by the end we couldn’t wait to leave. Sadly, this resort really lets down an otherwise incredible destination.

Dear FresserOJK, Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we’re very sorry to hear that your stay did not meet expectations. The issues you’ve described regarding room condition, cleanliness, noise, and the overall dining experience are certainly not the standard we aim to provide, and we apologise that this impacted your time on K’gari. Please be assured that your comments have been shared with our leadership team, including our Group General Manager, and the relevant departments are reviewing the concerns you’ve raised around maintenance, service flow, and food quality. We appreciate you taking the time to outline your experience so openly, as it helps us identify where improvements are most needed. We hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future for a far more enjoyable and relaxing stay.

At reception we were told that we could take luggage trolley to our room. This was not the case as our room only accessible via stairs. This was very frustrating for elderly guests. Not enough parking. Stayed 2 nights. Couldn't get any channels on TV. No cold water in fridge. Room wasn't serviced second day. Meals and beverages - expensive. Bed was comfortable. Air conditioning worked well.

Dear wendybD4213QD, Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay. We sincerely apologise for the challenges you faced with accessibility, parking, and the issues with your room amenities. We understand how frustrating this must have been. We appreciate your comments about the TV and fridge, as well as the lack of room servicing on your second day. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will address these concerns with our team to ensure improvements are made. On a positive note, we’re glad to hear that you found the bed comfortable and the air conditioning effective. Thank you for your insights, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a better experience in the future.
