We were staying for 4 nights for a conference, my friend and I had separately booked 2 rooms. I’m an Accor member and have had excellent experiences in Sofitel’s in the past. This was anything but a 5 star experience. We flew in early and had to get out to the conference so I’d emailed ahead making sure there was a bathroom or something I could change clothes in on arrival, before check in. I was assured yes of course. On arrival I was advised that only opens at 8.30 and we would just need to wait in the lobby for 2 hours, or pay a full extra night to check in early. We did for one of the rooms. The rooms were ok but I wouldn’t call them 5 star. Beds were very hard and uncomfortable, my friend asked multiple times for a softer bed which they said they had done and then just didn’t. But the real kicker was the way we were treated on exit. And had accidentally cracked the toilet seat, not by doing anything crazy just closing it. She let reception know and they were like oh maintenance aren’t in today we will get a quote on it and let you know. A couple of hours later on checkout they said the fee was going to be 2500 AED because this toilet is made in Portugal?? And they don’t have insurance ?? And it’s not a regular maintenance cost ?? The attitude of the manager was quite awful, he was patronising and rude, kept laughing at us, accused us of being overly bougie for taking an uber instead of a taxi “what, you take limousines???”. It was honestly pretty awful. For an honest mistake and maintenance issue we were treated like we had had a wild party and trashed the place (completely opposite to what happened). There’s a few other things I found interesting about the place. There’s staff outside almost never opened the door for us, and seemed to ‘help’ us get into a taxi by hovering until the last second and then closing the door when we had already closed it. There’s guy selling perfume in the lobby was shoving perfume sticks on us every time we talked in. There’s hotel is also not walkable at all to anything, I know this is kinda just how Abu Dhabi is but I’d hoped downtown we could at least find somewhere for coffee or walk over to the beach but it’s surrounded by highways so you can’t go anywhere on foot. Overall I was disappointed that the experience was not as expected given the cost and the way the hotel markets itself.
