Bizarre Mercure Experience

Not the quality of most Mercures and I’ve stayed in quite a few, - no lift, very basic, tired room with a strange smell. On check in I was told the bar was 24hrs, but when I came back at 11.00pm was told I would have to wait until 1.00am for it to reopen, due to staff change over. The bar manager was just downright rude saying reception was wrong Bizarre!

Do they understand customers are actually paying to stay here?

Although the rooms are decent enough, very comfortable beds and lovely balcony looking over the river Thames… Any interaction with the staff just felt rather odd? I just felt they lacked any training in hospitality or customer service, one evening the fire alarm repeatedly went off during the early hours and when brought to attention of the reception staff he couldn’t even say sorry, just repeatedly pointed out it was for our safety, which I understand, but it should not have repeatedly gone off! Also when asking at the bar what wine they had the barman just pointed at the list! Anyway, not bad for a nice hotel near Thorpe Park.

Stayed one night only, great location, fantastic walks by the river. Wonderful friendly staff, top marks for Magda! Very helpful and efficient. Parking available outside the hotel, very convenient. Would definitely recommend and will come back again.

Disappointing and uncomfortable stay.

Kirsty M TripAdvisor review

I stayed at this hotel for one night for a business trip and thank god it was only for one night. I checked in and was told I’m on the second floor, I asked if they had a lift and I was just told a point blank “No” - no offer to help me with my bags or anything. Anyway I hoofed my way up a couple of flights of stairs and had to follow the winding corridors like a maze until I got to my room. It was very basic, but seemed clean. However it did lack facilities, there was no fridge, not even a bottle of water left in the room. Only one towel. And now for the worst part. The bed was huge and the bedding very clean but my gosh the mattress was hard as rock. When I looked it wasn’t even a proper mattress, only a thin layer of foam. I therefore had THE worst nights sleep ever and on top of that I got up in the morning crippled. I genuinely don’t think I could have handled another night in that bed hence my joy at only being there one night. The room was also very very warm even though it’s October so I had to sleep with the window open, which was quite noisy due to passing trains and traffic noise. Breakfast was “ok” but definitely not worth £15.50. Next time I do a similar work trip I will definitely avoid this hotel and stay in the one further down the road.
