You just get a feeling that something is going to go wrong at times, and that was the feeling I got when we checked in. There were seven of us, we have been to Ypres before, but never stayed at the Novotel. The young lady who checked us in, had we were informed, just started, and she was obviously experiencing some difficulty. We all accepted this. She was eventually helped by an apparent “more senior” member os staff, who insisted we had only booked six rooms, not seven. One of my friend informed her that he knew exactly how many rooms he had booked, and had previously been confirmed by the hotel. This was eventually sorted., it wasn’t our error, and will leave it at that. We got seven rooms! Breakfast was not included, by choice. Now, the rooms. I really cannot fault them. They were immaculately clean, and comfortable. There was a fridge in the room, which had a bottle of water in it. Mine was never replaced. There was also a safe in the room, but the one in my room didn’t seem to want to work. I didn’t mention this to the staff, so I am sure they would have acted on it, should I have reported it. I would like to just say that the whole of the hotel was extremely clean and well looked after, so well done to the housekeeping team. We went out that evening, returning about 9 - 9.30pm. there was a sign on the bar stating last orders were at 10.30pm but the person behind the bar stopped serving at 10.00pm. It was quite surprising really; there were a lot of people in the bar, and an opportunity to make a positive impression on the new arrivals, whilst making a bit of a profit. The price of the drinks was reasonable, and cash or card was accepted, but there were only bottled drinks, no draught beers. So, we went to bed when the bar shut, at 10.00pm. Great nights sleep, comfortable and quiet. We arranged to have breakfast in the morning, meeting at a mutually agreed time. Now, here is another dilemma. The hotel was busy,; several coach parties, we were on the 1st floor, so that every lift that came to us was full. We looked for some stairs, but there only seemed to be fire exits, which were alarmed, so we waited, and waited, and waited for a lift that could accommodate even one of us, so we could get down for breakfast, which eventually happened. We paid for breakfast, producing a receipt to the breakfast “receptionist” One friend offered to pay for another’s breakfast. A simple task one would think, but no. We were told that each individual person must pay for their own breakfast. So my “generous” friend had to present himself, and the recipient of his generosity, to the lady at reception, and pay for two breakfasts. The cast was 25 Euros per breakfast. Each then received a receipt for the purchase, which was presented to the breakfast sentinel, and were admitted. I’m not going to elaborate, but we didn’t have another breakfast there, so take from that what you want. Everything seemed to go ok, until we went into the Novotel one afternoon. I can’t recall why. We were sat idling when a suggestion was made, “let’s have a drink”. No, didn’t work. There were three reception staff in reception. They were basically just standing around, chatting. There wasn’t anyone waiting to check in, or out so we asked if we could have a drink from the bar. Apparently there was no one available to serve us. One of our group has got a picture of these three “unavailable” individuals, who cheerfully continued in their own little world, expertly ignoring guests. One evening, we came back to the hotel after having a meal, the bar was open, and there was a lot of people in the bar. Very positive! We ordered our drinks, and tried to pay for them with cash, but the bar person refused to take cash, “card only” he said. Not the other times we paid! Terrible inconsistency throughout. One of our group did speak to the manager about our concerns. I heard her response and she seemed to question what he said, and made excuses. Had there been no interaction with the reception team, other than checking in and out, and the breakfast oh, and the bar staff, I wouldn’t be writing this now. The housekeepers do an amazing job, but they appear to be let down by those who direct them, which is very sad.

Dear guest, thank you for your review. We understand your concerns and we will talk them over with the whole reception team. We do have indeed a policy where we need people to pay for the breakfast before they can go to the buffet. That's the only way we can keep track. I have indeed talked to you and your guests the day of departure. I am sorry you felt like I questioned your concerns, because I did really take them serious and apologized profoundly. One of your guests did not wanted to elaborate on the issue and I gave him my mail address so I could listen to his concerns per mail. Again, our sincerest apologies for the bar not being working properly and the other issues. kind regards, Julie general manager

Don’t bother

We are currently staying in the Novotel In Ypres and what a soulless place to stay! The reception staff could not be more unhelpful and unfriendly if they tried any harder. You ask for a drink, not a chance. As there is no one to serve at the bar. Although 3 staff remain talking and standing around the reception area for the next hour. When they can actually be bothered to engage with their clientele. It’s not with a caring happy customer serving face. They clearly don’t want to be here. The background staff are the complete opposite, the hotel is kept spotlessly clean and they can not do enough for you. The front of house staff need to be retrained or take up another profession. The “breakfast” delights @ €25 is an absolute joke. Cold beens, over cooked egg and pastries that could be used as door stops. Myself along with my well travelled friends would highly recommend that you look at other options in Ypres if you want to be welcomed and look after.
