What do you get when you combine Fawlty Towers with the Glastonbury Festival? Apparently, our weekend stay at this Novotel hotel. One can usually tolerate quite a lot when enjoying a visit to the greatest city in the world – London. Supply and demand go hand in hand. For that reason, my criticism of this hotel is not aimed at the poor-quality breakfast pastries, the bathroom drain that didn’t quite work, or the elevator that came and went as unpredictably as Conservative prime ministers over the past decade. No, those shortcomings are almost to be expected at the price you pay for a room at Novotel London West. What one should reasonably be able to expect as a guest, however (drum roll), is to be able to sleep in one’s room. This was entirely impossible during the weekend of 31 January–2 February. There was a wedding taking place in the hotel’s event venue. Undoubtedly a fantastic party – for the guests attending it. For the rest of us, it resulted in windows vibrating from bass so intense it could be felt in the stomach. The noise level was astonishing. When we asked reception when it would end, we were vaguely told “15–30 minutes”, after which the bass continued for several more hours, until at least 1:00 a.m. Compensation for the lost hours of sleep – and the consequently ruined following day – amounted to £25 per person in bar credit. Of all things. Fine. However, when we attempted to redeem it, staff confusion ensued, and the pettiness reached a new low when the amount was suddenly reduced to £20. We were informed of this only after we had already ordered according to the originally stated budget. Frankly, I rarely write negative reviews. But this stay was so poor that I would strongly advise anyone who values a good night’s sleep never to be tempted into booking an overnight stay at this hotel.
