Aged Hotel, not comparable to other hotels out of Europe Disappointed from 5 stars

Good hotel with a need for upgrades

Pluses: Centrally located; Rooms with view over the Rhône river; Well soundproofed and very clean rooms; 8th floor dining room with great view; Well assorted buffet breakfast; Friendly and helpful staff with special kudos to Valentin Cuq, Concierge. Minuses: Rooms in need of updating. Only one electrical outlet with no USB port; 2 out of 3 elevators out of service during our first four day stay (May 11 to 15, 2024) No soap bars available for 3 days; On our second stay (May 21 to 22) we were assigned a standard room: inside bathroom door handle fell off (promptly repaired) and air conditioning unit was not working; Hotel staff does not respond to emails nor accepted to compensate for inconvenience.

A great experience largely because of excellent concierge services.

I have stayed at hundreds of fine hotels around the world, and Vivien and Valentin are the two best concierges I have ever encountered. They are friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable. They know Lyon, the sights, the restaurants, and the transportation system and they are very helpful. Valentin's recommendations about restaurants and sights were spot on. When my wife fell ill, Vivien spent at least an hour--and probably more--to get her an appointment at a medical clinic using his personal account. That is simply extraordinary service, and the two of them made what could have been an unpleasant stay in Lyon a wonderful stay. I would add that I don't think we were singled out for special treatment. I spent a lot of time at the concierge desk, and from what I could see everyone was treted well.

We arrived early, so our room wasn’t ready. But we checked in, and were told that our rate included breakfast. We were told to check back at 1 pm or so, so we left our luggage and walked around Lyon. Upon returning at about 1 pm, the front desk advised that our room still wasn’t ready, but another identical room was available on the 1st floor, so we took that one. Upon reaching that room, our room key cards would not unlock the room. I returned to the front desk, where the same cards were reformatted with our room number. I returned to our room, but the key cards would still not unlock the room. I returned again to the front desk, where I think the non-operative cards were discarded and new cards were formatted for our room. Front desk personnel escorted me back to our room to check out the new cards, and they unlocked the door this time. Front desk personnel tried to be helpful with this situation, which I appreciate, but it was an issue that shouldn’t have occurred. Also, when we checked out of our room after two nights, we were told that our breakfasts were not included, despite what we were told when checking in. My wife and I do not each much for breakfast, and would have taken other steps to get breakfast had we known that it was not included in our stay. That was about $136 extra euros that we had to pay for our stay. Positives were the nice bathroom facilities and comfortable bed in our room, although it was a bit smaller than expected, with much of its living space devoted to a hallway into the room from its door.
