There are Sydney hotels you spot instantly from the street, and then there are the ones you don’t realise are there until you’re already inside which open up like a secret world. Swissôtel Sydney belongs firmly to the second category. Wandering in from busy Market Street, and gliding eight floors up, this unexpected haven reveals itself to you slowly.
Swissôtel Sydney sits above Westfield Sydney, right where the city's main shopping artery flows into its theatre and dining districts. It's a location that sounds busy on paper, but the hotel experience is surprisingly insulated from the movement below. The first thing I said when I arrived was some version of the same line staff apparently hear all the time: "Wow, I never knew this was here!"
Once I arrived at reception level, the noise of the CBD dropped away and the pace shifted into something quieter, more measured, and more comfortable than I expected from such a central address.
The arrival is intentionally unique and slightly dizzying. I passed through the retail buzz below, then lifted up into a different atmosphere entirely. Reception is on level eight, and the shift was immediate. The sound softened, the light changed.
Marble dominates the space, particularly around Arches Bar, which anchors the lobby with curved forms and a sense of European sensibility. Music drifted through rather than filling the room, leaning towards jazz and easy sophistication rather than anything intrusive. It felt like an urban oasis – not in a showy way, but in the sense that I could exhale here.
Perfect for early arrivals, Arches Bar looks out across the city skyline and works equally well for coffee, a mid-afternoon pause, or easing into the evening with a drink. It's the kind of place where time slips a little.
Best hotel moment: The hotel feels like a sanctuary elevated above the city. Arriving at reception, you realise just how calm it is up here, compared to the busy streets below. The hotel aims to balance energy and tranquility; the jogging maps give a local’s advice on shorter walking routes around the city or a longer, more challenging 10km jog, to return to the hotel to rest and restore by the pool.
Swissôtel Sydney has 369 rooms and suites spread across multiple levels, and one of the first things that struck me was scale. By Sydney CBD standards, these rooms are generous. Many measure up to 34 square metres, which made a noticeable difference once I'd dropped my bags and started moving around.
The most popular configurations are king and twin rooms, with the twin set-up using double-double beds. I can see why families notice this immediately; two adults and two kids can actually settle in without any creative furniture rearranging.
Design leans into what the hotel calls ‘Swiss quiet luxury’. It's a soft and restrained palette, well-made furniture, and an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than trend. My room felt calm, built for comfort rather than Instagram theatrics, and the effect was cumulative over a few nights.
Views are the primary feature here. My room looked out to Sydney Tower and across the ornate roofline of the Queen Victoria Building, and those outlooks became part of my daily rhythm. Morning light, city glow at night, the slow drift of weather across the skyline.
There are practical details done well, like proper workspaces, good lighting, and layouts that make sense if you're staying more than a night or two. Suites include a Balcony Suite overlooking the QVB, which feels especially connected to the city below without pulling you back into its noise.
The dining at Swissôtel Sydney skillfully reflects its location. Modern Australian with international influences, designed to work around theatre times, shopping schedules, and the way people actually move through the city.
Ten Stories is the hotel's elevated dining room, both literally and figuratively. Perched high above the street, it's the place where sunsets do some of the work for you. The room came alive in the early evening, particularly with pre-theatre diners looking for something polished but not heavy. Grilled octopus to start, then New Zealand pink snapper with bush tomato and olive risotto cake or braised Wagyu beef cheek with bone marrow and honeyed farro, all threaded with honey. Plates are designed to share, pacing is unhurried, and the views drew my attention outward between courses.
Picture perfect: For the classic Sydney photo, head up to Ten Stories restaurant, where the windows overlook Sydney Tower and the city’s distinctive skyline. I also loved Arches Bar’s sweeping curves and the rooftop pool deck, with its white sun umbrellas and chic daybeds, is clearly a winner for photos amongst guests.
Arches Bar is active throughout the day and into the evening, with a steady rhythm rather than peaks and lulls. After-work drinks blend into weekend cocktails, and the bar becomes a meeting point for hotel guests and locals alike. Signature cocktails like the Arches Martini, the ice cold and near perfect martini I chose, take centre stage later in the day, but the space never loses its relaxed feel.
Breakfast brought a quieter energy. The buffet covers the expected classics, but there are small details that distinguish it. Honey from the hotel's own rooftop beehive was woven into menu items, a subtle reminder that even in the middle of the CBD there's space for something a little unexpected.
Sydney has no shortage of rooftop pools, but very few sit quietly above the city rather than competing with it. Swissôtel Sydney's outdoor, heated rooftop pool was one of the biggest surprises of my stay.
Styled with a Euro sensibility, the pool deck felt less like a city hotel facility and more like something borrowed from a restorative spa in the Swiss alps. Sun loungers line the space, the city hums below at a safe distance, and the effect is restorative rather than performative. I found it equally appealing for a morning swim before the day began or a late afternoon pause when the city heat softened. For a hotel so centrally located, this sense of escape is so rare.
Swissôtel Sydney's location is unbeatable. Sitting above Westfield means some of the city’s best luxury shopping is literally at your doorstep. Light rail stops are steps away, making it easy to move north to Circular Quay or south towards Darling Harbour without thinking too hard about logistics.
The Queen Victoria Building sits across the road, The Rocks weekend markets are an easy wander or short ride away, and ferries open up the harbour in all directions. Taronga Zoo, harbour beaches, cultural precincts, and hundreds of dining options are all within easy reach.
What makes the location special is not just proximity, but ease. The city unfolded naturally around me so I didn’t have to plan aggressively but got to wander.
Locals love: The location is unbeatable: you’re right in the middle of all the action in Sydney’s CBD. Close to all public transport, its location means you can reach all Sydney’s top attractions either on foot – straight across the road to the Queen Victoria Building or into the Royal Botanic Gardens - or through easy transport connections to those further afield, such as Taronga Zoo or the Opera House.
Swissôtel Sydney suits travellers who want access. Discerning international guests, business travellers, families, and the occasional rock star all pass through its doors, drawn by the combination of space, calm, and location.
Families will love the room sizes and twin configurations. Theatre-goers and concert fans will value the pre-show dining options and walkable distances. And if you're a first-time visitor to Sydney, you'll benefit from being able to orient yourself easily, with transport and landmarks close at hand.
Getting there: Swissôtel Sydney is located in Sydney’s CBD above Westfield Sydney, with light rail stops just outside and easy access to Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, and the city’s major theatres and shopping precincts.
