The vibe at Novotel Brugge Centrum: vibrant, contemporary, inspiring

Hidden away on a charming cobbled street, next to a former convent, Novotel Brugge Centrum was a welcome surprise. Just a 10-minute walk from Bruges’ fairy-tale sights, it somehow manages to feel both in the middle of everything and like a peaceful little retreat.

Inside, it’s a breath of fresh, modern air: think sleek, open-plan spaces designed by RF Studio, with cosy corners to read, work or relax with a drink. We loved how the library, bar and dining area flow together, giving the space a warm, social buzz.

Up in our room, courtyard views and a cloud-like bed were calling… but first, we had to check out the pool. Yes, a heated outdoor pool in the heart of Bruges! It’s a rare find – and glorious. If you're looking for style, calm and a central location, this place nails it.

"The big difference": There's nothing like plunging into an outdoor pool after a hot day of exploring. Follow this up with sundowners on the patio to complete the holiday vibe.

First impressions

The hotel is a striking white modern building set on a spacious square, across from a converted convent, complete with traditional bell tower. A glass façade offers a peek into the vibrant interior, inviting you to step inside. And once you do, it’s hard not to be drawn in by the thoughtful details: curated lighting, the signature Novotel scent and the easy-going rhythm of guests coming and going.

It’s immediately clear this isn’t your typical Bruges hotel. Bright, modern and full of energy, the space hums with a welcoming buzz. Instead of a traditional check-in desk, we’re greeted by a stylish green-tiled bar, where friendly staff interact with guests in an informal yet professional way. It sets the tone for what this hotel is all about: a sociable and stylish take on contemporary hospitality.

Designed by RF Studio – and their flagship hotel – the ground floor flows like a miniature cityscape. Pillars guide you like streets, branching into different zones – a communal dining table here, a cosy library nook there, and even a family lounge complete with sofas and a PlayStation. It’s open plan but cleverly zoned, offering spaces to work, relax or share a drink, all under the soft glow of warm lighting and curated music that shifts in tempo throughout the day. It feels less like a hotel lobby and more like a lifestyle hub.

Among the hotel's standout features? A heated outdoor pool (open April to October), set in a quiet courtyard garden that feels blissfully removed from the bustling city. Family travellers are especially well looked after here, with spacious duplex family suites featuring soaring ceilings and plenty of room to unwind.

With its modern design, central location and relaxed, welcoming feel, we're excited to spend some time discovering both the hotel and the city.

The rooms: stylish, spacious and inviting

After a day of exploring Bruges, we couldn’t wait to kick off our shoes and unwind. Our room was cool and calming: soft lighting, neutral tones and a bed to sink right into. We loved how the design felt modern and fresh, with thoughtful touches that made it feel more like a retreat than a hotel room. From our window, we could see the quiet courtyard below, but some rooms look out over the pool or the square, with the old convent and its little stone chapel.

The real showstoppers, though, are the two-storey family suites. We managed to get a peek inside and were impressed. They feel more like chic little apartments, with soaring ceilings and separate levels for parents and kids. It’s rare to find that kind of layout in Bruges, especially with room for up to four adults. If you’re travelling as a group – or just want that bit of extra space – it’s absolutely worth it.

"Our favourite room": The two-storey suites are real showstoppers with stairs leading up to a separate bedroom – a perfect hideaway for kids or friends seeking extra privacy.

Eating & drinking at Novotel Brugge Centrum: simple, fresh and delicious

If food plays a key part in your travel experience, Novotel Brugge Centrum has you covered. Each day begins with a continental buffet breakfast, served at two stations on the ground floor so guests can spread out and settle into a spot that suits their mood, whether that’s a quiet corner by the bookshelves or a shared table near the bar. Expect a wide selection of local favourites – including salmon, eggs, fresh pastries, fruit and decent coffee – to set you up for the day.

The all-day dining menu (available from 11am to 10pm) is a straightforward and satisfying affair. Local dishes like Flemish beef stew sit alongside international options such as shrimp curry, seasonal salads and a dedicated kids' menu. One of the nice touches is that you can eat anywhere in the open-plan lobby or garden, giving the space a casual, flexible feel that works for both solo travellers and families. Nachos by the pool, anyone?

"Good to know": Don't feel like walking 10 minutes to the historic centre? Hop on the free shuttle bus that stops just outside the hotel.

Local adventures in Bruges

One of the main reasons we chose Novotel Brugge Centrum was for its unbeatable location – close to the historic centre yet within a quiet area.

First, we decide to explore the local neighbourhood, heading south to the Minnewater (Lake of Love), where elegant swans drift past a picture-perfect castle. Just beyond lies the timeless beauty of Beguinage, once home to a community of nuns, now a serene tree-filled park lined with whitewashed cottages. Looping back, we pop inside the Church of Our Lady to admire Michelangelo’s exquisite Madonna and Child statue before the hotel pool becomes too tempting.

Tomorrow we've set our sights on exploring Bruge's fairy-tale core with its medieval Gothic architecture and photogenic canals. From Burg Square to the Hanseatic Quarter, artisan chocolate shops to art galleries, historical churches to whitewashed almshouses, everything feels within easy arm’s reach.

"Sustainable style": With heat pumps, rainwater collection and water fountains in every corridor, Novotel Brugge Centrum is serious about achieving sustainability.

Who will love it here?

  • Urban explorers who want easy access to Bruges’ historic centre
