Rotterdam had been on our bucket list for ages. A port city shaped by the sea, rebuilt with confidence after WWII, and known for doing things differently. We wanted to stay somewhere that felt chic, characterful and connected to the city. Enter Le Marin Hotel Rotterdam City - Handwritten Collection.
From the moment we arrive, it feels like more than a place to sleep. There’s a real sense of story here, woven through the design and atmosphere. Inspired by Rotterdam’s maritime past and the owner’s family history as sailors and dock workers, the hotel feels moody and thoughtful – dark tones, stormy sea artwork, sleek marble bathrooms and a neighbourhood setting that makes you feel like you’re living in the city, not just visiting it.
It’s romantic without trying too hard, stylish without being cold – and it quickly becomes our calm harbour to retreat to after exploring the city.
Like many guests, we arrive in the city by train, and the walk from the Central Station sets the tone for our stay. Ten minutes on foot takes you along wide leafy avenues, past a playground buzzing with local kids, into Rotterdam-West – one of the few historic areas that survived the wartime bombings. Le Marin sits on Henegouwerplein, a peaceful residential street that feels proudly authentic and lived-in.
Once you're inside the hotel, the neighbourhood bustle fades away. A dramatic painting of a stormy sea draws you in, while jazz plays softly in the background. The lobby area doubles as the bar and reception, and you can't help feeling immersed in the dark, moody aesthetic – deep charcoal walls, marble surfaces, textured upholstery and brushed metal accents. At check-in, we’re offered flavoured water and a bowl of havendrop ('harbour-style' salty Dutch liquorice). It’s a small gesture but makes us feel relaxed and welcome in this cool, classy hideaway.
Le Marin's design is rich with storytelling and full of seafaring references. A golden octopus sculpture adorns one of the tables. Black-and-white portraits of weathered sailors – including the owner's father – hang throughout the hotel. A statue from the Virgin Islands nods to the objects sailors once brought back to Rotterdam from far-flung ports. There are porthole-style mirrors, an illustrated book titled Heroes of the Sea and even a classic game of Battleships ready to be played in the bar.
This isn't your typical nautical décor. There are no anchors or ship wheels. Instead, the maritime theme is modern, minimalist and industrial – deep greys, navy tones, leather, metal and stone textures that echo working docks, cargo ships and port warehouses. Lighting is warm and low, creating a cosy, below-deck feel that’s evocative yet calming.
With just 68 rooms set across two buildings, the hotel feels personal and intimate. We are impressed by the staff, who are genuinely friendly and attentive, happy to recommend local spots and help us plan our day. More than anything, Le Marin is an ideal base for exploring Rotterdam – a stylish place to retreat, recharge and experience authentic city life.
Good to know: EV charging points are available right in front of the hotel. You can also rent car parking spaces in a nearby garage for €25 a day.
Depending on which room you choose, you'll either be staying in the main building or in an annexe called Le Petit Marin, a stone's throw away. Our Deluxe room is on the second floor of the main building, overlooking the leafy gardens and backyards of local neighbours. Waking up to that view makes us feel less like hotel guests and more like temporary Rotterdam residents.
As with the common areas, the design of our room is minimalist and chic – nothing flashy, just thoughtful details that made the space feel curated rather than corporate. We love how the dark walls, clean lines and soft lighting created a cocoon-like calm. Large windows let in plenty of daylight, balancing the dramatic colour palette so it never feels gloomy. A solitary artwork on the wall continues the maritime narrative, giving the room a subtle sense of place rooted in Rotterdam's seafaring heritage.
The king-size bed deserves special mention: incredibly comfortable, with crisp linens that promise (and deliver) a deep, restful sleep after long days exploring the city. The bathroom is spacious, finished in dramatic marble with a sleek walk-in rain shower, back-lit magnifying mirror and luxe The Botanist & The Chemist products that smell deliciously of fresh thyme. Everything feels indulgent yet practical.
Our favourite room: We loved our Deluxe room overlooking the gardens. Families and longer stays might prefer the larger rooms with sofabed in the Petit Marin annexe.
At the heart of the hotel is Bar Bato, a relaxed café-bar that feels as much for locals as it does for guests. Mornings start with excellent coffee and a continental buffet breakfast – fresh breads you slice yourself, croissants, yoghurt, fruit, seeds, pindakaas (peanut butter), Dutch cheeses, and trays of eggs and bacon. It’s a simple, tasty spread enjoyed in a cosy, lounge-like space.
As the day goes on, the bar gently transforms into a relaxed neighbourhood hangout. Tables and chairs are set up on the outdoor terrace, which looks out onto the street. We arrive on a Friday and throughout the day we notice locals stopping by for coffee and a group of teachers celebrating the end of the working week. We love sitting outside, people-watching as cyclists whizz past and kids play nearby.
In the evening, we try the hotel’s signature Stormy Sea cocktail, made with Hierbas de las Dunas – a herbal liqueur crafted from plants found in the North Sea dunes. Delicious! The bar menu offers small bites rather than full dinners, but the staff happily recommend nearby restaurants. We book a table at Ayla, which serves Mediterranean fusion food, and are treated to the full Rotterdam experience, just a 15-minute walk away.
Sustainable style: The hotel uses an electricity-based heating system and water-reducing systems, and participates in the 'Too Good To Go' scheme to minimise food waste.
We expect the moody interiors to be the highlight – and they are stunning – but what really steals our hearts is the neighbourhood. Staying at Le Marin gives you a glimpse into everyday Rotterdam life. Mornings jogging with locals in the nearby park, afternoons cycling past historic houses, evenings sharing a terrace with neighbours who actually live here.
There’s something special about waking up to the sound of a residential street rather than traffic, seeing kids on their way to school and locals heading off to work on bikes. The hotel is close enough to the centre to be within walking distance, but separate enough to have its own sense of community. It is the sense of belonging – of being welcomed into a small pocket of the city – that really makes our stay feel special.
The big difference: Staying in a residential area where you experience the real Rotterdam, not just the tourist sights.
One morning, we rent bikes from the hotel and do what the Dutch do best: cycle everywhere. Dedicated cycle lanes take us smoothly into the city centre, past the Hofplein fountain and City Hall, towards Rotterdam’s bold, modern skyline and iconic cube houses. We wander through the Markthal, craning our necks at the enormous ceiling mural and buying snacks from different stalls, and continue across the Erasmus Bridge to the Rotterdam Marina.
Another day, we explore the pretty district of Delfshaven, where historic canals, traditional bruin cafés and a towering windmill make us feel like we’ve stepped back in time. We hop on a waterbus ferry (you can take your bikes on the boats here) and travel 30 minutes upriver to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kinderdijk, an almost impossibly picturesque landscape of marshes, canals and windmills.
Rotterdam surprises us at every turn. It’s creative, confident and refreshingly laid-back – less polished than Amsterdam, but full of soul. And each evening, after a day of modern architecture, museums and waterfront views, returning to the calm, moody refuge of Le Marin is just what we need.
Insider recommendation: There are no gym facilities at the hotel but you'll find plenty of local parks, so bring your trainers or hire a bike and join the locals in their everyday exercise.
