Clientele problem with otherwise fine hotel

The hotel is ok, especially the garden villas. The problem is with the clientele. Hotel sells their all inclusive packages to tours from Russia and Kazachstan. When the swimming pool and beach was occupied by low quality tourist groups it was a complete disaster, unfriendly and even employees of the resort didn't seem to appreciate it, people stilling food from breakfast venue, etc. Next day the tour obviously left and it was like a different hotel with just a handful of private russian speaking tourists. I understand they need to fill the rooms, but so do people want to rest and should be able to get this information. All-inclusive tours are ruining the experience for all other private guests. It really hurts the Novotel brand.

I chose this hotel because it is centrally located close to the airport and mid island, making it easier to access either the North or the South end of Phu Quoc. It is not 5 star, but there are other 5 star hotels close by if that is your preference. I found the Novotel had a relaxed feel and that all staff were pleasant and greeted us every time we walked by. There are multiple pools and a well maintained beach area available to guests. The only issue with all of these is that they are quite a walk from the main wing of the hotel and all require transiting flights of stairs, so I don’t know how anyone with mobility issues would manage. We did not have any issues finding loungers to sit on at the pool, but the beach area could do with a few more. It was noticeable when a large group of Chinese tourists left on the Saturday we were there that the pool area was almost empty. Clearly the Novotel caters for large groups of tourists on a regular basis. The hotel (and most of the island) accommodates predominantly Russian and Chinese guests, with very few European or Aussies, but we were well catered for. The hotel is showing signs of needing some maintenance, but was generally spotlessly clean. Breakfast was plentiful and varied with something for all tastes and cultures. We did not eat other meals in the hotel as there was a small night market across the road with thirty or more food places and we chose to try out some of them most nights. As with most Asian countries all alcohol is expensive except beer, which is very cheap at about $1 a can. My slight niggle with our room (and I assume most of the hotel rooms) was the noise of the air conditioning, which was so loud that it took a couple of nights to get used to how loud it was before I was able to sleep without hearing it all night. I would certainly stay at the Novotel again for the location and moderate rate we paid as Accor members.

You can feel the friendliness of the staff from the moment you step into the hotel, and check-in or check-out is smooth. The hotel generously upgraded me to a suite, and the view from the room was beautiful. However, the design of the room is a bit strange. For example, the walk-in dressing room is not attached to the bathroom but in the living room. The bathroom also lacked hooks and there was no door to the shower room. . . . The hotel breakfast has many choices and tastes. There is a staff named MY in the restaurant who is very enthusiastic.

After spending nine busy days exploring the wonderful North and South Vietnam, we wanted to have some chill and relax time on the beach. We recently stayed 5 nights 4 days at this hotel. We booked a superior room that was very spacious and overlooking the grounds and sea. The room was tidy, although not 5*. The furniture had stains on it and the bedroom had some damp spots. The long balcony was tired and paint flaking off the bottom paneling. The glass on the balcony needed a clean as there were grubby hand prints and smears. House keeping was very poor. Every day we had to ask for hand towels that hadn’t been replaced and toilet roll. Our last full day the room wasn’t cleaned at all. No water left, bed unmade, no toilet roll and towels not changed. On checking out Thang was very apologetic and was extremely sorry. The hotel grounds were very clean and well kept. The restaurant for breakfast was excellent with so many different food options for all nationalities. We only ate once in the evening and had the buffet which was very good value for money. But they also provide an a la carte and there are many dishes to choose from. We only used the pool by the beach for a swim up drink. This was very clean. The beach was clean and tidy but I would suggest they should have more beds available. We struggled some days to find two beds at 9am as most had towels on. Very frustrating when these people often didn’t turn up until late morning. Suggestion for the life guards to remove towels after two hours if not used. The sea was calm and a lovely temperature. Although we did experience some sea lice that can sting (not painful). On either side of the beach 200 mtrs apart are two water sports companies. Lots of jet ski hire, paragliding available but also very noisy and busy and not ideal for those wanting to relax. The Best Western hotel next door played loud music late afternoons and also had entertainment during the evening and finishing around 11pm. We didn’t see or hear any entertainment at our hotel. Sunsets were amazing with stunning views. There is a street market approximately 200 yards from the hotel. They have wonderful street food outlets and many different types of restaurants. Many offering lots of fresh seafood options. I have scored the hotel average because of our experience with the poor housekeeping, no entertainment and noisy beach. The hotel appears to be popular with Russians.
