Not what it used to be!

Hadn't stayed here in about 10 years, but what a difference a decade has made on this once quality venue, which for a Mercure WAS really, really good - had a really nice restaurant with a great menu and food. Our stay early May left us really disappointed and tired - rooms are getting tired, the TV surround I guess had some trim missing, just screw holes and a gouge out the wood, sash windows rattled in the night (one did have a cardboard wedge, but the other not), even though the radiator was off, the room was so hot it was difficult to sleep and if the window was open noise (machinery/shouting) from the street outside was loud and to make it even worse late at night & very early morning stomping about and dragging furniture about (in the function room?). The first morning at breakfast, there had clearly been a group/tour staying as the breakfast buffet was almost non existent, the few staff were trying to replenish but couldn't keep pace. The second morning was much quieter and much better. We didn't eat in the hotel as the menu is now nothing more than simple bar food. Unfortunately, we won't stay here again...

Visited here for work. Was not able to get a car park space so had to park a 10 minute walk away. Checked in and was given no information about breakfast times and nothing stated in the room. She also failed to mention I had £15 dinner voucher. The room was clean and tidy but rather hot. No air con available. The window was open and was unable to be closed. This was an issue during the night with the constant noise of buses, people, church bells and then early morning bin trucks and traffic. I needed the window open for fresh air as it was so hot but it was so loud. Bathroom was dated and needed updating. The breakfast was expensive (£15) and was disappointing. Dry, cold hot selection that looked like it was sat there for hours. No customer service thought out my stay. The price was not cheap and was not worth it at all. Sleep issues need fixing for me to come back.

I just checked in The Kings Head hotel Darlington where hospitality doesn’t exist. When I arrived there was nobody on the desk and one of the tradesman shouted for someone to help me. Two ladies then appeared and did nothing but moan. They didn’t even want to give us a key each. She said you’re on your own!! Which I said no my brother is next to me. She then reluctantly gave us each a key saying she would need the other key back to program 2 new keys. She must have been fully aware we had 2 adults on the booking. I also had to ask her about the breakfast I had paid for. Welcome to Darlington LOL. I asked if I could get a refund and check out but the hotel refused as I had checked in 20 minutes ago. Avoid this hotel.

A comfy hotel but tired in places especially in the Dining Room around the windows. The bedroom was chilly and the fan in the bathroom didn’t work but we were only there for a weekend so not too worried. The food was ok but oversalted at times. The breakfast had a good selection. The walls are very thin, we could hear next door’s TV clearly and if you’re in a room at the front of the hotel, there is late night noise from the pub opposite including karaoke until 1am.

A long stay, but made enjoyable by the staff

Currently coming to the end of a 5 week stay at the hotel. The staff have been great in making the long stay enjoyable and comfortable. Special mention to Kathy who looked after our room and was amazing. Also Nikki who always made breakfast a pleasurable experience. The hotel is the best location for business and in our case, access to Darlington College.
