Nice location, and i'm sure in it's day the hotel was great, but the decor is tired and for the price you would be better of going to stay in a premier inn.

Surprised with the amount of room service crockery left in hallways when we checked in and still there the next day. Appreciate it was a food/Wine deal stay but not sure you can call your meat feast Pizza one with meat! Staff pleasant breakfast was fine.

Well located but very tired looking hotel

We picked this hotel as it was very close to the ferry terminal. Firstly the parking is not exclusively for hotel guests so this was full and had to use the local ncp parking!!! Hotel itself needs major lick of paint and carpets refreshed. I don’t think I’ve stayed in a hotel in my life that looked as tired as this place. Room had no air conditioning but luckily fan provided by hotel and the shower temperature was scolding as much as we turned it down it reminded hot. The only positive was the cooked breakfast was very tasty and the gentleman who seated us was extremely polite and so helpful.

VERY UNINPRESSED

R F 23/07/2021 TripAdvisor review

Very unimpressed all round with grotty carpets and grubby and stained upholstery in abundance everywhere, including our room. Paid for Privilege Room for five nights with breakfast, bedroom window was so rotten the bottom of the frame had dropped away from the glass and had clearly been like that for months and dare not touch it being certain it would have collapsed into yard below, stuffed the gap with towels to stop draft and keep noise of kitchen fans out. Extremely limited menu but chef was helpful getting extras in. Luckily, Got a parking place on the Monday we arrived, but we had soon had enough of the place, and when we left two days early we believe a ship’s crew had arrived pre cruise and the car park was full and we had a job getting out. The staff were all very helpful but we not only came home early but immediately cancelled our five night booking for The Dolphin in September because we would never stay there again.

Tired hotel, tired room

Michael R. Couples - 21/07/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

The whole experience was of a tired establishment. Dirty linen was left in a corridor, the decor was tired, the shower screen did not seal properly, creating a large puddle. In our room the double bed was against the wall, which meant one of us had to climb over the other to get out of bed. The furniture looked old. The only good point is the free parking and the location.

Dirty public areas and a very tired hotel

Ross Solo - 20/07/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

My dealings with the staff were pleasant and they were helpful and friendly. As for the hotel, it's in a good location but it is very tired, dirty and smelly. The carpets in all corridors are about 10 years overdue replacement. The rooms are extremely hot even on a very mild day with no air con at all. The car park is supposed to be residents only but it gets used by loads of cars who have no connection to the hotel at all because there is no control over it. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Overall very good value for such a good location. Corridors in need of a good clean but rooms were very clean and had all the basic facilities. Staff were lovely given a difficult situation and coping well. Annoyingly car park full as offered to non-hotel guests. Would recommend to anyone needing a good deal in a good location.

Very Disappointed

Mr P. R. Solo - 19/07/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

I used to stay at this hotel frequently before I retired five years ago. I have to say , this time it was appalling. The whole place is very tired, the staffing levels are on a shoe string, the cooked breakfast was reheated and inedible and when I asked to be moved because of the noise from outside the room, I was told it would quieten down, it didn’t. The chain should be ashamed Of running an establishment in this fashion and I will not return, nor recommend it to anyone. PS the booking app didn’t work either and I ended up phoning the hotel to book. Perhaps I should have realised then, that the stay would be a disaster!

Not the best stay

Pat T 23/09/2020 TripAdvisor review

We have stayed at this hotel many times, but unfortunately this was not the best of experiences. I fully realize the problems with covid but one girl on reception and trying to serve in the bar meant many people waiting at reception to book in(some without face coverings). Our room was as always very clean and the staff are lovely but I feel they are under a lot of pressure.

Short Stay in Southampton

David V 06/09/2020 TripAdvisor review

Enjoyed our stay at Mercure Southamption Centre Dolphin and generally in this post Covid lockdown period everything had been done to conform to Government guidelines. However there are a few general observations - I think there could be an improvement in the breakfast arrangement which was very limited and didn't real meet my expectations for an Accor organisation. When a vast majority of restaurants can now provide a reasonable meal out and would consider this a failing at the Dolphin. On a more positive note the staff were friendly and helpful. My last comments, which is not Covid related, I think better warning about accessing the car park could have been made when I booked the hotel and the hot water in our room was only mildly warm at any time.

in need of a refurbishment

Badly in need of a refurbishment. Holes in doors, loose door handles, peeling paint the list goes on. No phone, only 1 set of towels, no shower gel , no hook on the door for dressing gown, couldn't shut the wardrobe doors maids coming in even though I put the do not disturb on. I've stayed in all of Accors hotels in Southampton and this was the worst by far would not recommend.

Room had no phone, air conditioning, body wash, hair dryer. Rooms are clean but old, (other facilities within the hotel are not well maintained). Water from tap had really bad smell. Room service entered the room without knocking at the door (while I was getting Changed). Informed the front desk about this and they said they will speak to the staff but no apologies.

Disappointing

ra25661 Business - 11/03/2020 TripAdvisor review

Second time in this hotel and likely last. First time was ok and thought the little quirks were just that. Alas, this time it was worse. While I specifically asked for a quiet room (booked many weeks in advance), I get the room right next to the elevator! How can anyone think that's quite, beats me. The only other available room was "by the lane", which was deemed to be worse, so no choice left. As expected, it was noisy, with the elevator bing and voice all the time, the hard steps, bags, and the commotion usually taking place around the elevator. Room was actually more of a junior suite and had the bed been placed in the second room, it would've been likely very quiet. Unfortunately, it was right next to the (very thin) entrance door and a few meters only from the elevator noise. Furthermore, the bathroom window was open by about 3 inches. I advised the front desk after the first night, nothing was done. Otherwise the breakfast is good and sleep quality could be good, if one could get some decent sleep.

Thank you for taking the time in sharing your experiences and I am sorry that you left disappointed. We do hope that we have the opportunity in welcoming you back again in the future and to improve your lasting impression of the hotel. Kind Regards Lauren Sutton, Hotel Manager

poor customer service

TripAdvisor rating 1.0/5

Jprelack Business - 08/03/2020 TripAdvisor review

So disappointed in our stay at the Mercure Dolphin Southampton. We had booked 5 days while we were in town for appointments. During our stay we had multiple instances were things were forgotten and hotel management blamed us. Further over the course of 3 days, we experienced over 7 fire alarms, during early hours, the evening, and night hours. When I approached management about the disturbances and how it had affected the our stay and appointments, costing us time and money, they basically ignored our frustration going so far as blaming other guests instead of taking responsibility. The manager was incredibly rude and aggressive and told us there was nothing he could do. When I then asked to cancel the last two nights as I no longer felt comfortable or safe in the hotel, he flat out refused to offer a refund for those two nights and that we would need to deal. I have never experienced such poor customer service and a complete lack of effort in trying to rectify a situation. Do not expect anything from staff.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at the Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel. I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations; please allow me to express my sincerest apologies. Our guests and team members safety is of our highest importance and take all alarms seriously and conduct a full investigation. I know when alarms do sound they can be seen as a disruption or an inconvenience but we see it as a safety measure which is working to keep everyone safe. I am pleased though no further action was required when it did sound. I am sorry you felt you received poor customer service, at Mercure, we strive to provide a superior service experience for every customer; therefore your feedback is very important to us. It is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future. Sincerely, Lauren Sutton Hotel Manager
