Stayed for a couple of nights in early December. The hotel is very convenient for the aquarium, promenade and cairns cbd. It has a nice restaurant/bar overlooking the small pool and my room was adequate with enough space The rooms on the ground floor have no view (except a wall and a car park) though there are rooms on the first floor that seem to have balconies and views over the pool. Also the guest WiFi wasn’t functioning for much of the time I was there (you could connect but not to the internet) Note also that breakfast is a la carte only (no buffet) and the (free) coffee from the machine was cold There are limited communal areas though the seating and tables in the reception area are quite pleasant

When in Cairns, I like to stay away from The Esplanade, where things can get a little - shall we say - vigorous. The Mercure is close enough to all the major attractions to be within walking distance, and far away enough from the nightspots to be quiet. The rooms are large, clean, air-conditioned and quiet. The beds are comfortable, with plenty of pillows. The bathroom was clean, with an excellent shower recess . . . and no clingy shower curtain. There is a small mini-bar, and the attached restaurant is excellent. I'll be using it again.

The stay and staff are plesent enough, rooms are comfortable, Hotel is in a nice location at the end of town but everywhere is easy enough to get to with a short stroll which is just as well as I would avoid the restaurant for breakfast at all costs! my eggs benedict had the spinach just dropped on straight from water which resulted in one big inedible soggy mess.

I stayed here last week. To be frank, I cannot recommend this hotel. Here are my observations: The GOOD Room was large and clean (except for a small cubic zirconia on table -- where did that come from?) Bed was comfortable with nice linen. Bathroom was nice (but no bathtub) Good size TV. Staff were friendly and helpful -- none of the under was their fault. WIFI worked without problem. The BAD: Elevator was being renovated so had to use some truly shabby stairway with a mysterious block of wood nailed to the bannister. View from room -- garbage containers, dirty laundry, broken/disused furniture, staff smoking and using phones. Very dim lights in room. Lack of power points. They were very well hidden under bed side tables or in unsuitable places (waist height right next to door). Lobby coffee machine out of order. Cheap renovation of room -- linoleum was simply laid over a small step. giving a very lumpy and unsightly appearance. Check out required the use of a different and distant stairway (the shabby one was closed without notice) that forced us to leave the building and re-enter from the street, all the time lugging suitcases. This is not an expensive hotel, but neither is it a cheap one. They need to do better for the prices being charged.

On the positive the hotel is in a good location. Unfortunately it misses the mark of being a good standard that would be expected when booking mercure. The odd numbered rooms on the lower floor face onto a concrete wall which makes the room dark. There is no outlook at all. This needs to be made clear on the website. The bathroom is small and difficult to open the door and close it behind without a squish. The power socket next to the sink in the bathroom was insecure and wobbly. Overall the room was a good size with room for a family if needed. The floor has a slope on part of it - possibly a small step that has been removed. The restaurant isn't open all day and dinner is a basic menu. However there are a good many eateries nearby so this isn't a problem. Noise was an issue. There was noise like an industrial vacuum from the next door business. I think it could be a car valet place? During the night we could hear footsteps on the floor above, and a lot of animal squeaks - either bats or rodents - not likely birds. We were not disturbed by the maintenance that was happening on the elevator. In summary, we used this hotel because it was part of the Accor Hotels medium range. However there appears to be a number of rooms that don't come up to that spec and I do not feel this is reflected in the room rate where there are other hotels nearby at a similar rate for better value.
