If you’re travelling through Vietnam’s three main regions, March to May is one of the best times to visit.
Northern Vietnam is often at its best in February to April and September to November.
Central Vietnam is ideal from February to May.
Southern Vietnam is most comfortable in the dry season from December to April.
There’s no single best month to visit Vietnam. The right time to visit Vietnam depends on where you’re going and what you want from the trip. The country stretches more than 1,600 kilometres from north to south, so the weather can feel completely different from one region to the next. On the same trip, you might need a light layer in Hanoi, while Ho Chi Minh City feels warm, humid, and bright.
This guide helps you plan around Vietnam’s regional seasons. It covers the best time to visit Northern, Central and Southern Vietnam, month-by-month weather, travel-style tips, and the main festivals and holiday periods worth knowing before you book.
Vietnam’s climate is as varied as its geography, with three distinct regions offering different weather patterns throughout the year.
Northern Vietnam has the clearest seasonal changes in the country. You can expect four seasonal change year-round.
At a glance
The best time to visit Northern Vietnam is during spring (February to April) and autumn (September to November). These months tend to bring milder weather (18–25°C), and better visibility for a walk around Hanoi, visiting Ninh Binh, cruising Ha Long Bay or travelling into the northern highlands.
Summer
Summer in Northern Vietnam, from May to August, can be hot, humid and wet. You can still travel during this period, but you’ll want to plan around afternoon rain and allow extra time for mountain roads or outdoor activities.
Winter
Winter in Northern Vietnam, from December to February, can feel colder than many travellers expect. Hanoi can be grey and cool, while mountain areas such as Sapa and Ha Giang can get very cold, especially at night. Frost is possible in higher areas.
Central Vietnam has its own weather pattern, so it does not always match the seasons in the north or south.
At a glance
The best time to visit Central Vietnam is usually from February to May. These months tend to bring warm (24–31°C), dry weather, which works well for exploring Hoi An’s Old Town, visiting Hue’s imperial sites, taking day trips from Da Nang or spending time by the coast.
Hotter season
June to August in Central Vietnam can still be a good time for beach holidays, especially around Da Nang and Nha Trang. Just expect hotter days (30–35°C), particularly in the middle of the day.
Rainy season
From September to November, Central Vietnam is much wetter. Heavy rain, occasional storms and flooding can affect travel plans. You may find fewer crowds during this period, but it is worth keeping your itinerary flexible.
Southern Vietnam stays warm for most of the year, so timing your trip is less about temperature and more about rain.
At a glance
The best time to visit Southern Vietnam is within its dry season, from December to April. These months are better for walking around Ho Chi Minh City, taking boat trips through the Mekong Delta and spending time on the beaches of Phu Quoc.
Rainy season
From May to November, the rainy season brings higher humidity and short, heavy downpours. The rain often arrives in bursts and clears afterwards, so it does not always disrupt the whole day. You may just need to keep plans flexible, especially if you are travelling by boat or planning outdoor activities.
Travel tip: The rainy season in Southern Vietnam also has its advantages. The Mekong Delta looks greener, crowds can be lighter, and travel can still be very manageable if you plan around the afternoon showers.

Vietnam’s popular festivals add an extra layer of cultural richness to any visit.
Tết festival typically falls in late January or early February and is Vietnam’s most significant holiday. Streets come alive with decorations, traditional performances, and family gatherings. However, it’s worth noting that many businesses close during this time, so plan accordingly.
Celebrated in September, Tết Trung Thu Mid-Autumn festival features lantern parades and mooncakes, making it a particularly magical time to visit cities like Hanoi and Hoi An.
Attending a festival not only enriches your trip but also offers a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture and traditions. Don’t miss the chance to see locals donning traditional attire and sharing stories of their heritage.
March and April are among the most comfortable months for a first visit to Vietnam, especially if your itinerary covers more than one region. The north is mild, central Vietnam is sunny, and the south is still in its dry season.
Don't let the rainy season put you off visiting Vietnam. Rainy season does not mean constant rain, especially in the south where showers are usually short and followed by sunshine. Travelling Vietnam during wetter months can also mean fewer crowds and lower prices. The main exception is Central Vietnam from September to November, where heavy rain and flooding can disrupt plans.
Off-peak months (roughly May to September, depending on region) in Vietnam tend to offer lower hotel rates and fewer crowds. Southern Vietnam's rainy season is particularly manageable for budget-conscious travellers, while northern Vietnam's summer heat keeps visitor numbers down.
The dry seasons in Vietnam are generally easier for family travel: December to April in the south, February to May in Central Vietnam, and spring or autumn in the north. Avoiding extreme heat, heavy rain and holiday closures (such as Tết) makes planning smoother with children.
Two to three weeks is a comfortable timeframe for a north-to-south Vietnam trip covering Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. March to May gives the best weather overlap across regions.
