Good to Know

Is it worth visiting Dijon if you're in France for a weekend?

The simple answer is: yes! Make the most of your time in Dijon by booking an old town hotel close to the main sights. From Place de la Liberation, the main square in the historic centre, many attractions are just a few minutes' walk away. (Remember to wear comfy shoes – the cobblestones can be hard on your feet.) It's also good to know that there are things to do in Dijon during any season. There are multiple wine festivals and Christmas markets in winter, and Dijon International Food Fair takes place in November. You can cool off at Lake Kir's beach during summer.

Are there free things to do in Dijon?

Some of the best things Dijon has to offer are free. The Museum of Fine Arts offers free entry, as does the Musée de la Vie bourguignonne, an ethnographic museum housed in a former convent. Stroll down Rue des Forges, the most charming street in the city, to admire and photograph the 15th-century houses with their multi-coloured roofs.

What's the best way to get around?

When you arrive in Dijon, stop by the tourist office in the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy and pick up a Dijon City Pass, which will give you free access to public transport all around the city. The pass also offers free entry to certain attractions, as well as discounts on bike hire.

What are some other essential details to know?

When you're shopping, you'll endear yourself to local shopkeepers if you say "hello" or "bonjour" when entering a shop (as long as the shopkeeper isn't already engaged in conversation!). If you visit the local food market, it's best to take your own bag, as plastic bags are being phased out.

Which is better, Lyon or Dijon?

We have great admiration for our friends in the beautiful city of Lyon, but we believe that Dijon is at least as good an alternative to a visit to Paris when it comes to sightseeing, culture and food.

These are just some of our favourite things to do in Dijon, which should get you off to a great start on your adventure in the capital of Burgundy.
